The ACTA community and "home made" ships?

Mongoose
when the shops run out what the chances of some folk on here trying thier hand and doing some of the ships in Resin and the like?

i'd have a go, allthough i really don't know how to.

would this be ok if Mongoose has stopped producing?

also we need a sticky on the forum for Trades and Ebay links so that we can get as many ships that are lying around gathering dust out into groups who will use them?

well, their would be I am sure some copyright issues, people can make new designs and sell them as generic ships, however making a replica Hyperion out of resin could get you in trouble, not only with mongoose, but with Warner Brothers as well.

As far as I'm aware, this community is not devoid of talent in this field, we all know that Urobach produces his own designs from resin. I also personally know a man who is excellent when it comes to working with plasticard, green stuff and the like, he has already made the EA Centurion class from EFNI, has told me he'll make me a vorlon planet killer, he has already made an equivalent to the narn G'Kar class which I believe he has made in a manner that is producable in quantities.

I myself will be attempting two new centauri ships, specifically aimed at post 2267 [i.e the crusade era], whether they turn out okay I'm not sure. Once I have a prototype I'll start looking at stats; and maybe start posting up here with pix . . . see whos interested and at what level.

For now I'll reveal my intended names/classes. The Coutari class Destroyer = war level; and the Sio Poro class Strike frigate = skirmish level.

I'm quite sure that any new ships mongoose "ordains" someone somewhere will build them. With permission of course.

GZG make some thinly-diguised Nials, Starfuries, Sentris and Frazis. They're roughly the same size as the Mongoose ones, the quality is... well, you can tell which one's which.

They apparently recieved an unannounced visit from WB's lawyers with a cease-and-desist notice a few years ago, but a deal was patched up and GZG still sells them.

I'm coming to the conclusion that Mongoose' "mothballing" is likely to be permanent, so the (last?) best hope of seeing metal again is if production is outsourced.

GZG, given their previous (Jon Tuffley famously wrote the space-combat rules for the old EFSB) , would seem to be a good candidate.

As long as the ships are unique and your own design, I don't see anyone having a claim against you. Just don't use any of the copyrighted IP and sell them as generic ships. Someone with decent talent could do well I think. As others have said though, don't go about trying to sell recast Mongoose stuff or both they and Warner Brothers will have issue with you and I don't think anyone here wants to spend time in jail over some little metal spaceships... ;-)

Cheers, Gary
