the 2008 update book - ideas

Any reply from Mongoose on what they actually plan to do in the future?

Oh btw. we as community could make rules for Space Stations, Valen etc.
There are many experienced gamers and playtesters around, who could do that i think.

I "thought" JMS had said no tothe fiction because it was a bit Naff?

A start could be Getting Rich Bax to update all his 1st ed stuff. Was some quality writing in there
As note its not the books which from what Ive seen of the B5 novels out there, I at least partially agree on the naffness, but if you go down to the fan fiction part of the forum and read the dilgar war story (or at least what there is of it so far its apparently not even halfway done and already about 40 chapters long  ), I have a feeling youll be pleasently surprised since it is by far the best fan fiction I've read for, well, pretty much ANYTHING. And yes a campaign based around that particular story would great :)

As for what Id like to see in the update books, in descending order:

- REDONE GAIM LIST!!!! Anyone who does not see them as the biggest, most glaring problem with the entire game needs to play a few games against them!

- Official tweaks to a few of the other problem ships. But please, for pity's sake dont use a chainsaw where a scalpel is called for. Historically Ive noted that Mongoose seem to have a tendancy to overcompensate when they nerf/upgrade a problem ship (the whitestar is the biggest culprit here having see-sawed back and forth over the fairly balanced point its at now about 4 or 5 times from too weak to too good and so on but Id point at the current Demos and Chronos (though these arent too bad currently), and the armageddon Saggitarius as other examples. Tweaks mean just that, slight tweaks not radical upscaling or downscaling in firepower, manuevering, surviveability all at once! A quick read through other threads on the forum should make it pretty clear which ships the community generally considers the troublesome one

- Revise the Abbai. As they stand they simply dont stand a chance against the other fleets (even the raiders) The shield mechanic is a good one and works beutifully on the shadows but the problem I find with the abbai versions is the recharge rate is so low that the shields are generally only good for stopping 1 volley and then theyre pretty much useless for the rest of the game, perhaps a special order to 'redirect power to shields' allowing them to fully recharge their shields (or least increase the charge rate somewhat) at the expense of weaponry might be on the cards?

- Plug the PL gaps in the Vorlon and Shadow lists. Shadows need a skirmish choice, perhaps a gunship (Id suggest making it so people can use the old AOG large scale shadow fighter model) and for Vorlons a carrier would be great at raid (Variant on the transport carrying 3 or 4 fighters perhaps?) (NOT a fleet carrier though I think that might be pushing it for fighters as nasty as the Vorlon ones!)

- whether the above gets done or not: Bring back the armageddon points split options. They were just better.

- Thats basically it. I like many others have been hoping for ages that we could adress the issues with the game as it stands currently before looking to add new stuff! I could understand mongoose wanting to release as many new ships as possible if they were going to make money from selling the minis but now theyre not going to be doing that, it just makes the case for 'fix the current problems first before you add new ones' argument!

I'd also like to see some ruling to help discourage swarm fleets, say for example a ship count as well as PL. The ship count could be the PL doubled, so in a 5 points of Raid PL, each player could use no more than 10 ships.

Simple and I think a great way to adjust one of the main complaints about the game.

Ive played a Few Gaim Fleets and well I see No problems with them. Are they a Challenge Yes very Much so. ARe they a Pain In the ass? Hell yeah.
But Broken? No. No More so than The super white star or the emin happy narn, or the interceptor happy EA/Centauri.

...and yet theyre still undefeated at every official mongoose tourney to date.... The 'emine happy narns' have one round of doing a chunk of damage then thats it, theyre back to slow tough but somewhat undergunned, interceptors, even in large quantities on crusade EA etc are completely ignored by a huge slew of weapons in the game (and lets not forget the the Gaim are even more interceptor happy than either EA or Centauri as well as their other bonuses....). Every other fleet in the game has weaknesses to offset their strenghts. Would someone like to point out the Gaim 'achilles heel'. The only things I can see is 'extra vps for killing queens' and lack of actual weapons that can crit but that for me is not even close to enough to offset:

So many fighters and fleet carriers that its pretty much irrelevant how many you kill since theres more where that came from!

Very tough ships all with high hull, lots of hit points and crawling with interceptors, Advanced AF and Flight computers to boot. Theyve even got nice troop scores!

Lots of breaching pods and bonuses to their boarding rolls.

Loads of attack dice that can hit anythinging within a 40" radius and ignore pretty much all defences in the game.

But this is getting off topic again, if you DONT think the gaim are broken then you are 1) in a very small minority and 2) wrong :P but this is not a thread to discuss that its a thread about what youd like to see in the update book, if you want to argue about the gaim then Id suggest either digging up one of the MANY existing Gaim threads or stating another one.

Except that assuming someone feels it's not broken then why would they want it in an update book? ;-)

Cheers, Gary
- who still feels limiting the queens will fix the fleet period, regardless people's other complaints about the Gaim.

without diverting too much ( and I can anyway since I started the thread :P ) Gaim fleets are most abusive when certain ships are used in mutiples creating masses of fighters and huge amounts of AD E-mines droped on ships for which the only defence is having hull 6.

Whilst a few people don't agree, most do say that the gaim need a new hard look (including three playesters who have said so on the forum)........

it sort of does come under the umbrella of the new book as there a re a few ships that need looking at - Demos is another...............

:D

I'm going to say "no" to the Earth-Minbari campaign. Mainly because the previous edition already has a book devoted to it and I would prefer something new.

A few ideas:

1. Expand the campaign rules. Add logistical support (Amateurs study tactics, pros study logistics) - where is that rail gun ammo when you need it? More ships protecting the freighters means less ships in battle. And so on.

2. An outline of how the rules can be used with other games - Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars (given the miniatures issue). I understand that materials are already out there.

3. Sometimes I look at some of my boardgames and wonder "is there a way to combine Twilight Imperium III with ACTA? is there? Although one then wonders if the ground forces should base their rules on Starship Troopers or Battlefield Evo (neither of which I have).

4. Additional characters. Perhaps going a bit Star Trekkie, but instead of adding Mr Admiral, maybe I could have a Mr Security Officer (increase boarding actions) or Mr Engineering (better repairs). Or anything else which could make ships a bit more unique. It might imply <whispers> a points system</whispers> - but maybe an upgrade to weapons here and a downgrade to shields there.

Agreed. As you said, the multiples create the other problems. Fix them and the fleet works as I have found in my own games with them.

Dunno about the Demos, but I guess I'll find out since my Centauri fleet will be here soon.

However, back on topic, the only thing I really want is an updated Q&A / errata addressing the issues that have come up so far.

Cheers, Gary

I think the new book should have chocolate covers. That would increase sales massively

So far it's sounding just like Amageddon 2e. Fix a broken race, change a few things, have an FAQ.

Nope, not like Armageddon - there won´t be any butt-ugly ships released along with the book...

Well, they´re being released now, on ebay...

Then there´s the Adira, Liati, White Star Carrier/gunship...

Hi,

I'd like to see a book of B5 ACTA campaigns - the usual suspects including Dilgar War, EA - Minbari war, the Shadow war and the Drakh (?) plague.

I'd like to have an appendix at the back of the book so we can create our own ship counters.

Aha, I see on the Doubles tourney pack one of the fleet rules:
No Gaim fleets this time round - sorry, the fleet list is being revised!
:)

Sweet! Now just have to wonder how long before it's published ;-)

Cheers, Gary

And watch he gaim get Hit with the super nerf bat. To bad I think only a Minor change here or there would do it.

Has any official news been released about this "update book"?

I agree with a few posts on here that the best thing would be to tidy up the game. Correct balance issues (Gaim) and clarify rules.

For new material I think there should be a more indepth campaign system and expanded space stations and Ancient fleet lists.
