As I recall, it was an interesting aesthetic that seemed a combination of aerodynamic technological reality against a surreal backdrop, somehow divorcing any human interaction in the scene.
Compare this to Frazetta, where the illustration seems testeronically human centric, and Sorayama, Vallejo and Bell, which are very technically clean and perfect.
And then there's Giger.
I think there was break between the Sixties and Seventies, that was softened in the Eighties, with presumably more money invested in artwork; possibly you could thank TSR for that, though I doubt much attention has been paid to this niche by art historians.
I think I came across one coffee book from this series, and the Perry Rhodan translations, where I first could distinctively identify the style.

Dangerous Fontiers and Settlers in Space - same book - Settlers is the US version IIRC
You missed TTA:Spacecraft 2000-2100
There is also a combined book called Spacebase: 2000 - this is GSB and Spacecraft in one book.

Yup, big mistake, the moment you start mentioning real life history, you end up with some real life villains, and real life villains are controversial because some people think they aren't villains after all, and not everyone is going to agree that there was disillusionment with foreign policy. If the authors are going to make sweeping statements about real life events, those are their opinions, and maybe not everyone is going to want to read them. However if they are talking about fictional aliens, no one can dispute them, as they are their aliens, there is no way one can be wrong about the aliens one created. No one is going to say that the Klingons were just misunderstood and not the baddies of the original series, unless they are the authors writing a story about them.
