table size

At the moment we are using 4x4 but we only have battles of between 500-700 points, when we get more stuff we will use 6x4.

Personally I don't think a 6x4 table will take much over 3 units of infanrty and vehicles.......

I am ordering the plans and will build my very own "Avenger Ultimate Gaming Table" this spring/summer that rocked my socks off! It's dimensions are 8'x4' and it... Well pictures are worth a thousand words, and a friend of mine is a contracter who confirmed that with plans it can easily be built for under $200.00 US. Here it is:

Now wipe the drool off your keyboard before something shorts out!

So make the pull-out trays army & terrain storage bins with drink holders. You can customize this baby any which way, which I plan to do, as I do more wargaming now than rpg anyway.

Hmmm...Not really sure what the advantages are for that(apart from extra 6') to make it worth €200 over good old 6'x4' gaming table.

Sure normal gaming table doesn't have cup holders etc but don't need those. Drinks hold nicely on either some spare space or on nearby second table :D The surface with it's water pencil thingie is useless since the board would need to be covered with cloth anyway to get proper base colour(or in case I get to finish my plan "modular board sections" with pieces of foamboard with sculpted terrain features).

Nice board but 200$? I think I rather buy 200$ worth terrain. Those enchance IMO wargaming more than fancy board :D

Though nice building project.

The table wasn't what i was impressed with- it was the room as whole. The amount of planning i need to do to get a game run, as i have no dedicated space for, it is huge.

I have to play on the bedroom floor of my one bedroom flat at a time which is convienient to my wife. It's once a month if i'm lucky.

I'd love a fortress of solitude to game in with fridges and storage and air con etc.

We are sort of lucky playing at my flat as we can fit a 6x4 in the sitting room without it being too cramped, where we used to play you had to climb over the couch to move around the room, and there was often half a dozen people squeezed in there as well, total nightmare.

The dream of having a room big enough to play with a huge table with good all round access...... *SIGH* If only I had war gammed when I used to live at home many years ago..... we had a 12x6 (at full stretch) dinning table and it didn't fill the dinning room...... The advantages of big old farm houses.....

Ah well that is more to be impressed :D Dedicated gaming room...Aaaaaaah!

If I ever get rich enough to build my own house(yea right...) I'll make sure it has room big enough to be turned into gamer's paradise :D

8'x5' gaming board(minimum). Lots of cabins to put models(plus somewhere good dry storage room for models that don't fit...) plus terrain and whatnot :D

Until that time I'll have to live with my 2 gaming board sections. One that is 5'x4' and one that is 6'x4'(best part is those 2 can be clipped together since my dad has room wide enough for that. Or the smaller one simply goes to my house to act as my gaming board...Kind of small but atleast it fits. Storage is easy though. Lies flat between wall and bed. Done!

I have just moved and have a room big enough to put just about any size table in it. My question is what size should I go for? Is there a size beyond which it is pointless to go? I presume you can't have one too wide as you won't be able to reach into the middle.

What are your thoughts on the best sized table to get?

Depends a lot on how big battles you want to represent(and what games you want to play)!

5' is pretty much max practical depth for the reason you mentioned.

For width 6' is good standard width but if you can get 8'. That gets valuable in bigger games.

Of course the bigger the battles you want to play the bigger the board needs to be...If you are really ambitious(and play for example historic games with large scale actions) then any width can be welcome(I'm certainly hoping for the 8' board for my 6mm modern age wargame! Gets bit cramped if you want to go for regimental size...Battallion works but regimental...Better use reinforcement rules)

This is a debate we have often had. I think the general consensus is a maximum of 6 foot wide, trying to stretch across anything wider whilst possible would be rather impracticle when it comes to moving models and taking measurements and checking LOS, other than that as long as you can make it.

I would say 6x4 is the minimum you want to get, you can always mark parts off board to play smaller games. Getting a smaller basic set up and then trying to make larger can be a pain. Just make sure if your boards are bigger than the supporting table that the boards have plenty of support, there is nothing worse than a careless knock or placing a heavy rule book on a corner and watching your minatures taking flying lessons.

I still like the Avenger at 8' x 4' and the slide out trays are great for reference to cards and rules, place to hold dice, drinks, etc.

Plus, for me, it helps I have a 3000 sq ft home with an L shaped living room downstairs. The one wing of this room was designed specifically for a Pool Table, but they run about $1,500.00. I figure a $160.00-200.00 gaming Table with say $2-400.00 worth of Terrain lying around to put on top as needed will see alot more use than a pool table over my lifespan. I'll play war-games on the Avenger until I get to old to walk down the stairs. Perhaps if I bank the savings from the pool table I didn't buy, with interest I can install an elevator in my retirement days, hehe.

I could see some distinct advantages to using the avenger table for minis games... all your reference sheets right there under glass (not getting spilled on by the kiddies). I would just add a few dice bins aound the corners, to keep them from rolling across terrain, or off table.

someday, maybe someday.

My table is 8 × 6 feet. Lengthwise is fine but 6 feet wide is just a little too big for comfort. Width is I think far more critical than length. If I was starting again I would give serious thought to going metric and making it 1.5m wide (around 5 feet) by as long as I can fit though two separate tables that could be joined if required would be more useful.

I use terrain boards that are two feet square. If I went metric I would make them 50cm square instead. Five feet wide is a bit awkward for length as it argues for boards that are either one foot or 2,5 feet on a side, one is too small and the other a bit too big. Part of the reason for going metric is that I can get wood cut to precise metric sizes very easily but imperial sizes are more awkward (it is a long story).

Sticking with imperial measurements and a board 5 feet wide 20 inch square boards would do very nicely.

My table is 8 × 6 because I got hold of a board of surfaced chipboard that size, a frame was added to stiffen it and sides to hold the boards in place. It sits on an old dining room table and can stay there all the time which is just as well as it is rather heavy and really takes two people to move it.

If you are at all interested in naval games paint the surface blue/grey for that and just add land as required for wargaming.

So firm suggestions:
Make the width and length both multiples of a number so you can make terrain boards that size if you go down that path.
Make the width no more than five feet or 1.5m
Make it quite study.

Good hunting,
Michael
