Subsector Map generator?

PoppySeed45

Banded Mongoose
What I mean is, is there a program out there that can graphically generate maps for a subsecotr? Like, if I have the data already, and I just want to input it, and get a good looking map generated, is that possible? I hate drawing one by hand (filling in the hexes on a copied piece of paper).

The two I use are Traveller Universe and Galactic 2.4 (both running on Windows XP). Galactic 2.4 is an old DOS program (runs in DOSBox). Universe is also now a little old and I hear there are problems in Windows Vista with the current version. A new version is expected out at some point as the developer is working on it. However, this is a spare time project and it may be some time as he's doing a complete rebuild.

Links to software and data can be found here:

An example of the type of maps that can be produced from Traveller Universe can be found here:

There's sec2pdf:

Though it's a bit fiddly to use, being perl-based.

My map site can do it online:

It's kinda squirrelly. Skip down to the form at the bottom, blank out the data and metadata fields, paste what you have, pick some options, and cross your fingers.

Thanks all! Will use them and see what works out. My OS isn't TOO new (XP, SP2) so we'll see what comes of it.

Unless there's more...

The really ancient subsector mapper used (and released) by DGP for the Mac works with the 80-column sector format in use at the time (Mongoose's is different), and still works in the last rev of the Mac OS to include Classic mode (10.4). It creates a Draw file for a single subsector. Multiple files can be stuck together in AppleWorks (Draw mode) to create sub-quadrant, quadrant, or sector-sized maps quite handily.

I wrote a ruby script that uses RMagick to produce some really nice looking maps. Search on these forums for the numerous other threads about subsector mapping ;-)

Squirrelly or not, it's very useful! PNG files of individual subsectors using a web interface. Very cool. Thanks!

I just loove that site more and more

Gosh, this takes me back. First BASIC program I ever wrote was to randomly generate subsectors on a PDP 9 (sorry, know that's actually off topic). 1983.

A total "Seconded"! Joshua, you have done us all an immeasurable service with travellermap. I use it all the time, if only to "go exploring" during a break at work.

My 9yo even has it perma-linked to his iPod Touch, and used it to find the J-4 route through The Rift. It inspired him to try to design a J-4 scout ship that could make the run. Anything that fires a kid's imagination about Traveller is good in my book! :)

BTW, Your handheld version works pretty well. I suspect an iPad would be the best way possible to use your site if you allowed some sort of "hover over" data on any star you put your finger on.

So again, THANK YOU for TravellerMap!
