Starting Kit Variations (DW)

Sir Brad

Banded Mongoose
OK something that has worried me from both back in the day and with the Compiled & Revised Edition is the relatively small variation in starting kit for each character class and the fact all Combat Professions start out with Max (mundane) Armour meaning their equipment progression is 1) Adventure Gear + Specialist Weapons 2) Horse 3) Warhorse 4) + Barding.

I find the Knight to be the worst offender in this department (with the Barbarian not too far behind), at first Rank their isn't much to tell Sir Max, Sir Ben and Dame Jen apart except the Jen has Girl Parts in stead of Boy Parts, but how can you tell under all that armour?

So I give Knights the following options when choosing Kit

1) Weapon & Sheild
Sword & Shield, Morning-star & Shield or Long-sword

2) Armour & Mount
Plate Armour or Full Mail Armour & Horse with Tack

other Professions options to follow

Most of the PC knights I've run/played with trade in their plate during character creation and go wild with the extra cash.

Same with other PCs selling their initial equip during character creation and re-equipping from the proceeds.

I kinda thought thats how everyone did it. :o

Perhaps you could break it down so that each character class had a certain amount of money for equipment + cash in hand. I'd be tempted to say that a starting character must spend all of his equipment money before the game starts (or allow up to about 10% of it to be added to cash in hand), rather than running around in their undies with a jingling purse!
