Starfield playing mat advice

I'm thinking of making a space gaming mat for our games. Anyone have any advice on how to do this?

Any ideas on materials or techniques?

Depends on how much space you have, really. The easiest solution would be to get a piece of black cloth with the right dimensions, and spray some white sprinkles on it with an old toothbrush. Using the same technique, you can use other colours to ad nebulas and such to the background; if you have a little more cash to spend, you can airbrush those basic "space-features" onto your cloth. Then, you can roll it up (on a stick, fpr example) and put it someplace safe (just try to avoid wrinkles).

With bit more Space, you can use styrofoam, wood or any other light material, give it a black paint job and add stars as mentioned above. As dimensions, I´d suggest either several 24"x24" pieces, or two 32"x48" pieces (anything bigger than that will be extremely difficult to transport).

I tried my luck with a gaming table thread a while ago; you can find it here:

You can buy ready made starmats from Ground Zero Games in the UK.
They are made from felt and are each one is indivdually painted.
They are imported from the USA.

I got one of those. They're quite decent if a bit overpriced. Still a great option if you don't have the time or patience to make your own.
