Squadron Box #7: Federation Reinforcements

Just to let you all know, this is now up on our web site (http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/miniatures/ctastarfleet/federation/squadron-box-7-federation-reinforcements.html) and we are looking to start shipping this at the end of April.

Too bad you these boxes have to be linked to the ADB compositions. I would have much rather preferred to have gotten an NCF and a second NCL or DW than another DN and BC (of which I have more than my fill from the fleet box).

I'll pass. I will have a Fed Squadron box and Fleet box, giving me 2 DN, 3 BC, etc. I don't need more DN or BC... I need NCAs, NCLs, DWs.

Which means either I get stuck with a DN and BC I don't need (and will have to bother with selling), or I buy individual NCA, NCL, DWs at $14.99 each.

How can you not need BCs? That's still the best ship in the Federation in my opinion.

3 is plenty, and I probably won't ever use 2 DN, let alone more.

My original fleet building plan was heavily based on the Fleet Box + Squadron Box Model – However I am now changing this plan to be more targeted toward potential tactics.

Too many large point models – never or rarely used (and when they are used they become beam, plasma, drone and torpedo magnets)

Maybe Mongoose/ADB will revisit the Squadron Box contents or create new box sets – however the priority need is to create a player base, increase the available miniature selection and resources for players.

Since you can buy a NCA + NCL +DW for $45, or NCA + NCL + DW + DN + BC for $40, you could literally THROW AWAY two ships from Squadron 7, and still be out ahead vs buying individual ships. Doesn't seem right, but that's the way Mongoose has priced the individual ships.

I'm hoping they come out with Fleet Box #2 for the various empires. Still the best buy for your dollar (or equivalent) and allows MPG to feature ships that weren't in Fleet Box #1 for whatever reason.

You do also have the 24-ship Romulan Border Box reportedly on the way which may work better for some folk intending to build a Federation fleet based around the "war builds". In fact, add Squadron Box #7 to the two each of NCA/NCL/DW you get in it and you'd have a pretty strong foundation for building on IMO.

The only problem with that is you're buying 24 ships, only 6 of which are Federation -- there's also 10 romulan and 4 gorn.

I can see that as being a problem. 6 Feds, 4 Gorns and some lumps of metal no one will every use.

more realistic play.
Don't roll dice...
Stand 10 feet back adn throw the excess ships at the intended targets.
Ships knocked over are crippled, ships knocked off the table are destroyed, and pieces broke off create real damage to the ships.

scoutdad, that is great thinking! Now may I go bowling for ships at the next F&E matchup? I still have the 6" die.

:D

Glad I won't be at the next F&E match-up, then.

First off you can almost always find a use for left over ships you don't intend on using, if you don't mind being creative or leaving them on some sort of auction site; though I do think that the idea of a 'swap shop' thread is a good idea - maybe someone can make one and make it sticky so it's always available.

Secondly no box set is ever going to be balanced and contain only ships that everyone who might purchase them will want to use, someone will always be unhappy. Plus I'm assuming their boxes are limited by the remit of the contract their in.

It is worth bearing in mind that these Squadron Boxes are not just for ACtA:SF players, but are also intended to be suitable for those playing SFB, FC and Starmada too.

The original point of boxes like these in the 2400 series was to act as introductory sets for people playing Federation Commander; this box in particular was keyed to the Fed Ship Cards offered in FC: Romulan Border. (Both Klingon Border and Romulan Border are offered as alternate starter box sets for that game; the refitted pre-war ships are mostly in with the Klingons and Kzintis, whle the war classes here are offered alongside the Romulans and Gorns.)

I wouldn't be too surprised if there was eventually a series of releases moe explicitly keyed to ACtA:SF, perhaps more in line with how the various starter sets over in A Call to Arms: Noble Armada are offered; but as it stands, sticking to the Squadron Box format allows the current 2500 series to do one of the things it is supposed to do; support Federation Commander in the same way that its 2400 predecessors do already.
