Spreadsheet for creating ships

Here is my first draft of a spreadsheet to create ships.

This one is for the core rules. If this goes over well I will build one for small craft and Capital ships as well.

Remember to only enter values into the green cells. Please tell me of any errors you find.

There is one divergence from standard rules in regards to Luxuries. My version adds 1 ton PER stateroom for the Steward increase. Just a ton for +steward seems rediculous for liners (too cheap by far!). This is changeable if too many folks complain (edit: I changed this to match the core book rules).

So please check it out and tell me what you think :P

Shipbuilding Spreadsheet v1.0 (2007 XLSX)
Shipbuilding Spreadsheet v1.0 (2003 XLS)
Shipbuilding Spreadsheet v1.0 (ODS)
Shipbuilding Spreadsheet v1.0 (ZIP with all 3)

*edited to give more versions*

It works out for liners as well, as the number of passengers you can care for is based on your level of steward skill, 1 level of luxurious doesn't mean you can carry 20 high passengers without additional stewards on board.

Also there's another spreadsheet available here:

Good point. The '1 ton' rule is fine for the Type Y yacht; once the basic crew is aboard, there isn't much passenger space left for the Baron of Whatever and his retainers. A large-capacity liner (such as those Tukera Lines operate) is a different matter.

When I download this it saves as an html document, not a .xls file. And when I try to open it up, all I get is garbage.

When I try to select engines/power plants or jump drives I get Value errors.

I am running Excel 2003, so it has to convert the file, and I'm not sure if that is an issue or not. the other cells seem to calculate ok though.

I'll try saving as a 2003 file and see what happens =)

Thanks for testing it for me!

Added a 2003 version as well as an ODS version. Hopefully this will allow for the error messages to work...

The link to the ODS works, but not the spreadsheet.

Top sheet! Well done.

I don't have a problem with the luxuries as stated in the basic rules, but as a house rule I would require some kind of actual steward be employed to carry high passengers, with the luxuries acting in effect as a skill DM.

Middle passengers can be expected to put up with this kind of thing, though.

Since Luxuries already only acts in a linear fashion (i.e. each ton allows you to cater to two extra high or 5 extra middle passengers) I think per stateroom is a bit steep.

A few observations:
The ODS is not working at all.

The formulas you have used will need the commas (,) replaced with semi-colons (;)

Not sure what the msoxl: command is for, but Open Office Calc is not recognising it. Calc does allow you to hard code formual into validations, so this might be what you are attempting.

Excel 2007 file (in Open Office), problems occuring
Worksheet Tab - validation lists working:
  • Cells D24, D25, F3, F78, F129, G3, G78 and G129 are all returning an error (Err:520). They should resolve correctly when D24 and D25 are fixed.
Cell D60 lists Mining drones instead fo repair drones
Software warnings logic assumes all programs will be running simultaneously.

Hope this is of use.
Nice sheet though.

Fixed the errors in the 2003 and 2007 versions found by SilverEye (Thanks!) and removed the ODS version as it had way too many errors to clean up.

Changeds the Luxuries rule back to book standard.

Will now install OpenOffice on one of my PCs so I can clean up and post an openOffice.org version.

There are still problems with powerplant cells D23, F23, G23 and I23 and backup powerplant cells D24, F24, G24 and I24. I think it could be somewhere in the I column cells as D column is just a plain If statement.

Open Office will do most of the substitution work for you if you open the xlsx file. Also you can hard-code the inputs for validity lists (including through formula) without needing to call columns of cells.

Opened and edited in OpenOffice.org and hopefully fixed the PPlant issue =)

I love it. Thanks. It's better than what I was doing. When do you think small ships and capital ships will be done?

If you folks think that all the bugs are ironed out in ther 2003 and ODS versions, I will do a bit of testing on the high guard stuff and get to work on it this weekend.

Give me a week or so =)
