Spirit Magic help please

I am trying to figure out spirit magic having upgraded to runequest II, and finding it in every other respect much better than 3rd ed which we were using. Of course 3rd edition spirit magic was essentially what is common magic in RQ II.

It probably easier to ask some clarification questions (sorry theirs quite a few!)

1) Firstly to negotiate with a spirit the book says at least Devotee level but I cannot see that reference any where else, only follower, spirit worshipper, sharman, high sharman. Can someone clarify what a devotee would be.

2) To use spirit magic offensively, could a bound spirit be released and commanded to attack a enemy in spirit combat (presumebly by returning to the spirit plane)

3) If character is in spirit combat are they unable to perform combat actions on material plane? ie be defenceless.

4) Could a bound elemental spirit be commanded into a appropriate body of its element and then be efffectively used to attack physically? ie an earth spirit be used as a gnome elemental?

5) can a guardian spirit be cast like other defensive spells as a defensive CA in response to a ofensive CA?

6) Finally as spirits have to have a permanent effect, there spells cannot be instant or inflict damage only improve or hinder characteristics, attributes and traits. However as they persist for as long as the spirit is let out from it fetish they could be effectively on permanently, the only fear being a unwelcomed banish?

Perhaps Ive missed the whole gist of spirit magic, but any clarity would be great.

Thanks all

Apologies, it should say Spirit Worshipper. That being the level needed to communicate with spirits as described under the Spirit Walking skill.

Yes and yes. I.e. you must break the binding to permit the spirit to return to the spirit plane, but it'll do the task you commanded before seeking its freedom.

3) If character is in spirit combat are they unable to perform combat actions on material plane? ie be defenceless.
Yes. Their consciousness is dragged onto the spirit plane and they lose awareness of their body.

4) Could a bound elemental spirit be commanded into a appropriate body of its element and then be efffectively used to attack physically? ie an earth spirit be used as a gnome elemental?
Yes... but its much more fun to embody it yourself. ;)

5) can a guardian spirit be cast like other defensive spells as a defensive CA in response to a ofensive CA?
I don't see why not.

6) Finally as spirits have to have a permanent effect, there spells cannot be instant or inflict damage only improve or hinder characteristics, attributes and traits. Yes. It is one of the main advantages of Spirit Magic. You can keep them going as long as you want.

The emphasis is on being able to communicate with the spirit (which is spirit worshipper rank), or, to have someone discorporate you so that you can chat directly on the Spirit Plane - which if you were a shaman (i.e. Fervent Rank) you'd be able to do yourself anyway.
