Special Actions off the board

Came upon this question playing Blockade this weekend: can a ship entering on from the board edge enter with a special action active? I know ships in hyper can open a jumpgate, setting precedent for ships not on the table using SA, but that is the only one they can do. So, by the word, you need to announce SA, then move, I'd have to announce SA off the board. Case: I was using 4 Drakh Light Raiders to runs past 3 Chronos and an Apollo. Only hope: head for planet, run like hell, APTE right past him. Thats 21" a turn, plus planet speed, but only if I can APTE as I enter the board edge. Please note, this is not a complaint, merely a clarification question.

I don't see why not. The off-table area is considered to just be empty space, and a ship flying through space can do an SA.

but you can't launch fighters in hyperspace, which always baffled me, or indeed Drakh ships. I'd quite happily sit my mothership their, open a JP and send the raiders through (who sadly don't have AJP)

Hiff what has that got to do with the price of fish?
The question is can a ship entering the board from a table edge use an SA.

Not quite true; a ship with the AJP trait can perform any SA if it enters the table through another ship's JP. So off-table ships can perform SA; it is the hyperspace part that causes the restriction, not the off-table part.

no, but it was being compared to SA@s in hyperspace as well.
I believe their is no reason to not allow SA's off the table, but then their should be no restriction on launching auxilliary craft off the table or in hyperspace... but their is.
I should have explained that I was getting at their being some rules that make little to no sense, Starting of the table in theory is no different to starting in hyperspace, hence my comment about launching in hyperspace.

I see what your both getting at, and this was our dilemma: there are some things you can do in hyper, and some you can't. My argument at the time is that the ships I was using aren't even jump capable, they were in realspace and just entered the combat area, so I thought that they should be able to use SA. I will wholeheartedly agree with my opponent that that mission can suck against small, fast ships, and since it was a campaign game, it was even worse. He had no real chance, even without me using APTE.

I would like to see being able to launch fighters in hyperspace. would make more use for the WS fighter and WS carrier combo. launch all the fighters then open the JP and hold it for a turn to allow all the fighters to swarm out onto something.

Amen to that Kattadder, (not specifically for the WS, but for everything) of course the WS fighter gets to act normally on entry unlike Drakh raiders or any other fighters which would be fine advantage

Yes the Blockade Run is quite difficult against someone with fast ships. I had 4x White Stars doing the running once. My free turn, they get 22.5" on. Turn 1, they get 45" across the table, only 3" more to go. So they only had to withstand 1 volley from 5 War points of Shadows

And that brings up another question. If I have 4 Hyperions (one flight of Starfuries) in hyperspace as reserve, can the fighters start deployed (as per the rules of 1 flight per ship may start deployed) or do they have to sit in the hangers, deployable upon jumping in?

They can start deployed, as normal. Remember to put them on support of their parent ship, else they'll get stuck in hyperspace (fighters move after ships, and the jump point closes as soon as its creating ship moves through it)

And if you had bought any independant wings you could deploy them as escorts for ships in Hyperspace too.
