Soundtrack for your Games?

I would add the band "Rhapsody of Fire" and their various works. This is for those not familiar a Celtic style metal band. I don't always use stuff with lyrics but sometimes it can add a lot of mood if it is not jarring or intrusive. I also recently used Apocalyptica's version of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" during a fight in a river at night.

I try to get some music from the cultures the party is adventuring in at the time. So, as they're in Western Shem, I' have a Putomaya CD on North Aftrican music and a CD of traditional Middle Eastern Oud music.

In general, I like thematic classical music (Scherezade is my favorite).

Usualy, by the time we really get into it, we're all to noisy to pay attention to the music anyway. i just use it as a warm-up for when the players get here and things get started.

I also recommend Midnight Syndicate and Nox Arcana CD's. Great stuff.

I thought I was the master of original soundtracks for gaming before I saw Vincent's list... :o Wow!

I have yet to try any background music for my games as some of my players think it might be a little disruptive. If I would play background music at the game table, I would go with the music of Castlevania. They are best when played with real instruments, and they cover a wide range of moods. NightShader1, kazamajin1 and Rey187 each have a good collection of such songs. I find lot of good songs from video games.

Some old school Dr. John, I'm talking circa 1968, the Gris-Gris album, is pretty good mood music for shaman ceremonies, working for either Picts or Black Kingdom shaman. His newer stuff wouldn't work. While very good, it's too funky. But Gris-Gris inspires much tribal imagery when I listen to it.

In case you don't know, Dr. John's "persona" is that of a New Orleans witch doctor. Witchcraft in New Orleans has its roots in the "arts" brought over by the African slaves.

Lots of good stuff from NightShader here: http://www.shademusicstudios.com/music.html

Anybody get ahold of the Age of Conan videogame soundtrack? It's going on eBay for quite a hefty price. Is it worthwhile?

You can hear samples at the AoC fansite. This one has 7 sample songs, and you can find 9 of them in the Fan Kit.

They dont sound like the music of Basil Poledouris, but they have a wide range of styles, and they sound fantastic!

I was rather disappointed with Age of Conan soundtrack. It has two or three good pieces, a few mediocre ones - but majority of 22 tracks are quite generic, bombastic fantasy crap.

Hi guys,

I'm currently working on a few RPG soundtracks but I still have a few older pieces that I give out for free.

I've always felt that http://www.jamessemple.com/music/battle3.mp3 would work for Conan.

Perhaps I need to write some new fantasy/mediaeval music?

bluejay, pretty good (esp. for free! ;) ) though it seemed a tad repetitive even for a shorter piece. Maybe the same elements but in a longer and more varied piece would work better for me.

More fantasy/medieval music would be fine. 8)

But my personal favourite is the soundtrack to the dreadful game, "Conan: The Dark Axe". I emailed the makers, Cauldron, begging them to release the soundtrack. Apparently I wasn't the only one, for several weeks later, I had a reply telling me they were putting them all online for free. :D It can all be found here

Looks like this link has since changed to:

http://www.cauldron.sk/p_conan_m.html

Liking the tracks so far and less derivative than I was expecting.

Thanks, that's an old track though.

Unfortunately most of my newer tracks have been for different styles of games. Some of the free stuff can be found at http://www.jamessemple.com/shadowproject.php

Droid Arena might work for Conan stuff although it's a bit frenetic.

Children of Dune ost is simply amazing and lends itself well to Conan (with both the "fanstasy" orchestral theme and the middle eastern melody hooks).

Highly recommended.

Hi all, here's a new piece I'm working on...

http://www.jamessemple.com/music/epicjourney2.mp3

Admittedly this is a little short and jumps around as it is to be used as a showreel.

If there's any reasonable interest in me producing more of this music then I might write a full album.

cheers

James
