Some thoughts on future products for Traveller...

Mongoose
Hello everyone!

I’m new to this forum, and to Mongoose Traveller (but not to Traveller itself; back in the day, the old black box set was my very first RPG!). I’m loving the new iteration of the rules, especially the character generation sequence!!! I thought I might as well put my tuppence worth in as to which books and products would be good to see, IMHO…

· Fire, Fusion & Steel
To reiterate what some have written previously, it would be great to see an updated version of this TNE book, introducing as much optional fine detail as the referee deems appropriate. Amongst other things (which I haven’t thought of yet…) it could cover-
o The philosophy of tech level advancement, and its effect on societies. This would also cover the implementation of tech level gradients for homespun settings.
o Weapon design, both for starship and personal weapons.
o More intricate versions of the vehicle and starship and vehicle design procedures- including production and allocation of energy, mass (not displacement) based drive systems, accurate energy demand and production, etc…
o Alternative technologies, such as other FTL systems, etc…
o Ulta tech guidelines, taking the options for technology into realms in advance of those normally covered in the standard Traveller milieu.

· World Builder’s (or Tamer’s!) Handbook
Again, to build upon the system in the Traveller core book, the return of a more detailed world design book would be most welcome! In such a book, it would be nice to see-
o The “Hard Science” design options in the core book could be developed further, which would result in more realism than every world having a breathable atmosphere.
o A ground up approach for building star systems, starting with the star type and going on from there, detailing orbits and all orbiting bodies.
o Options for population and settlement growth, modelling population size after initial settlement based upon world habitability, and colony age, etc…
o Ultra tech Colonies, following on from options in Fire Fusion and Steel, describing the impact of ultra tech on stellar and planetary development.
o Advice and guidance on developing 3d star maps, based upon describing accurate stellar frequency, stellar ages, clusters, etc… It would also be nice to see a description of large scale stellar events (supernovas, etc…) on nearby systems.

· Exobiology Handbook
A new book, focusing on providing rules and guidance on the development of feasible aliens, and their psychologies, societies and technologies. The book could use worlds and environments generated using the World Builder’s Handbook, and introduce alien development rules based upon exobiological theory, as the discipline is currently understood. No “men in rubber suit” aliens please, and no anthropomorphised Earth animal either… lets have some truly alien aliens!!!

· Character / Combat Handbook
Lets have a book providing optional rules for character development, maybe developing further some of the options available in the core book for point buy, etc… Also, a set of options could be included to provide as many extra details in personal combat resolution as the referee wants to use.

· Brilliant Lances
A fully scalable starship combat game, able to create detailed battles between individual ships, or massive interstellar fleets!!!

· A new setting
If inclined to, Mongoose could develop and produce their own campaign setting, independent of anything else. They could then have full say over all aspects of its development and progress, as maybe they don’t have over other settings. It may be nice to see the introduction of an optional metaplot; always been a fan of those!!! Lets make it as weird and “Sci Fi” as possible, but fully adhering to a sense of science and realism…
o Mongoose could even follow the example of another gaming company, and run a competition to develop a setting, which would then be marketed professionally.

Anyway, those are some of the things I think would make excellent additions to the Traveller line; demanding, ‘aint I?!! Does anyone know if any similar products are in the works, especially technology or world building books???

I really like Mongoose Traveller, and I am enthusiastic about the game. However, I’m tired of the constant reissue of new rules sets, so lets make this version of Traveller stay the course, and grow into the most flexible and developed science fiction gaming engine available!!!

Sorry for droning on, and on, and on… I hope my post hasn’t been too long winded. Any comments would be appreciated!

Ciao,
Jump 6 out…

Sounds like an excellent OGL product for fans.

Watch for a new set of ACTA rules for a mini game. One could always use that for the starship combat segment of things over the standard rules.

There plate is pretty full with standard supplements. For alternates, they already have Judge Dredd and Hammer's Slammers. An unlicensed totally new supplement is highly risky from a business perspective. The Open Gaming License or the Foreven sectors are there for players to develop such items.
