Confederation Navy: Assault Shuttles, Landing Craft, and Gliders

L. Instead of a fifteen tonne detachable bridge, we could use a five tonne drop pod.

M. Or, we could cheat and install a single cockpit, plus engineering, accommodations, and life support.

N. Which, I suppose, makes it a detachable cockpit.

O. Some small craft encase the cockpit in an ejection module, equivalent in capability to a five-ton escape pod.

P. Doesn't mention engineering.

Q. And I don't see a five tonne escape pod in the Handbook.

R. Though three acceleration seats from the one tonne escape pod is equivalent to a one and a half tonne cockpit.

S. The one-ton lifepod can accommodate up to three people and consists of little more than a trio of acceleration couches, a small rocket to de-orbit the pod if it is close enough to a planet, a heat shield, and a parachute.

T. There are sufficient supplies aboard a life pod to provide 21 man-days of food and life support, along with a medkit, survival rifle, and three survival kits.

U. It is worth noting that the medkit included with the lifepod includes three lethal doses of Mercy-7, a barbiturate analogue, along with three doses of MetaboliX, a medical fast drug that puts users into a sort of suspended animation for up to two weeks.

V. The one-ton lifepod can accommodate up to three people and consists of little more than a trio of acceleration couches, a small rocket to de-orbit the pod if it is close enough to a planet, a heat shield, and a parachute.

W. An average parachute has a vertical descent rate of around 17mph (although much faster and sportier ones are available) with a glide ratio of 1:1.

X. Manoeuvre drive factor/zero eliminates the need for heat shielding.

Y. A bunch of shock absorbers on the bottom should be sufficient for a descent of seventeen miles per hour.

Z. Though, this may also be an additional utility of factor/zero manoeuvre drives.

2. Theoretically, could be a cube.

3. I was already thinking, that we use rectangular containers, because that's optimal with our roads.

4. If height is an issue, than you could use squares for interstellar transportation.

5. Or, if multiple decks aren't a problem, a cube.

6. You could have a hybrid drive, rockets and manoeuvre drives.

7. Manoeuvre drive factor/zero for atmospheric reentry.

8. Rocket blast for a brake landing.

9. Though detachable bridge still says a soft planetary landing.

Confederation Navy: Assault Shuttles, Landing Craft, and Gliders

A. Instead of a drop ship, you could call it a drop box.

B. It's never been quite clear to me exactly how long does a descent last.

C. Especially a direct one, straight down.

D. If it's six minutes, that's only one turn.

E. Only with enemy forces within ten klix, could you switch over to six second combat rounds.

F. Other than that, a weapon system can only fire once.

Confederation Navy: Assault Shuttles, Landing Craft, and Gliders

G. In theory, you could use a tractor beam to pick up a one shot dropship.

H. Or, even, act as a virtual space elevator.

I. Which would depend as to how long it would take to pick up a hull sized object from the surface.

J. Or, from depositting one.

K. Given, that tractoring has been rated as factor/one acceleration.

Confederation Navy: Assault Shuttles, Landing Craft, and Gliders

L. Repulsor bays have a default range of short.

M. That would mean that at an altitude of twelve and a half hundred klix, you can pick up a hull, and tractor it towards you.

N. Or, you could drop an unpowered hull, and slowly lower it to the ground.

O. It might also be a solution to factor/one acceleration from the surface of a Terran norm gravity well.

P. The pull from the tractor beam would overcome the local gravity field, for the spacecraft to reach orbit.

Confederation Navy: Assault Shuttles, Landing Craft, and Gliders

Q. It's an interesting question as to how the workload will get distributed.

R. You can use multiple tractor beams to grab one target.

S. Attraction is capped at acceleration factor/one.

T. Capacity is multiplied by the stated performance of the tractor beams.

U. But, in the case of a Terran norm gravity field, can it be divided in order to reach the acceleration factor/one, in face of a countervailing gravitational force?

Confederation Navy: Assault Shuttles, Landing Craft, and Gliders

V. For the Confederation Navy, if it had to install a repulsor/tractor bay, the large one seems the cost effective.

W. Since it defaults at technological level thirteen, a very advanced version would be installed on the new fast dreadnought class.

X. Medium ranged at ten megametres is the border between low and medium Earth orbit.

Y. Which is a decent distance to pick up anything from the surface.

Z. And, in theory, could be retrofitted into some orbital space stations.

Confederation Navy: Assault Shuttles, Landing Craft, and Gliders

1. Activating a factor/one acceleration drive should neutralize the local gravitational influence.

2. If thrust hundred percent directly away from the gravity well.

3. That would mean that the tractor beam can accelerate the spacecraft directly to wards it at factor/one.

4. If the local gravitational field is neutralized, as long as the factor/one drive is active, than you could place the spacecraft in any orbit from ten megametres downwards.

5. If there was another space station with a replusor bay ten megametres further, you could hand off the spacecraft, and have it tractorred higher.

6. in theory, you could have a series of space stations spaced twenty megametres apart, and use them as a transport system from the planet to the moon.

7. Or, the repulsor bay could function as a low powered mass driver.

8. If it can pick up an eight hundred tonne spacecraft, it can spitball an eight hundred tonne asteroid.

9. Which at four kilostarbux per tonne, is still cheaper than ten kilostarbux per tonne slug.

Confederation Navy: TRI Fighter

1. Triple Raw Integrated Fighter.

2. For now.

3. Though, I was thinking more that the cockpit would be on the point, at sixty or ninety degrees?

4. With three angled panes making up the windscreen.

5. Three triangled walls would be made up of harvested nickel iron.

6. Which has an organic gravitational field.

7. Three manoeuvre drive modules at each corner, for maximum manoeuvrability.

8. Though, I guess, that could also make it a Y Wing fighter.

9. We could hybridize with an X Wing, to mount a laser at each wing tip.

A. Kidding aside, you would have the basic model, developed during the War of Imperium Aggression, which needed to be both cheap, easy to manufacture, yet cutting edge.

B. The equivalents would be the Messerschmidt Komet, and the Heinkel Volksjaeger.

C. Since it probably worked out, they kept it.

D. The TIE Fighter series lends itself to modularization.

E. Which our TRI Fighter would not.

F. And while a solar coating is possible, that's forty percent at two fifths of a power point at four fifths of a megastarbux.

Confederation Navy: TRI Fighter

G. After excavating the planetoid monitors, the Confederation Navy had leftover tailings.

H. These got smelted down into triangular molds.

I. Three ironick sheets are then welded together, to form the hull of the five tonne smallcraft.

J. If we have a windscreen, then the tips don't meet in front.

K. You plug in ship components from the rear.

Confederation Navy: TRI Fighter

L. If that doesn't work for the spacecraft construction rules, then plan/bee are cannon casting.

M. The tailings are smelted down, and poured into five tonne triangular ingot molds.

N. You then laser out the interior, after it's cooled down.

O. And you suddenly have four more tonnes to add to the smelting pool.

P. Though, I suppose you could have stuck in a four tonne bonded super dense plug, and just pulled that out.

Confederation Authorized Volunteer Armed Long Range Yeomanry: Organization

Omnis pugnat, quis renuntiare potest.

Cells - two to five Troopers
Patrol - two to six Cells
Troop - two to six Patrols
Squadron - two to nine Troops; Captain
Battle - two to six Squadrons; Captain Major or Senior Captain
Column - two to six Battles; Grand Captain
Great Company - two to six plus Groups; six plus Battles; Great Captain or Lieutenant Colonel

A captain can have over 1500 troopers? That seems high. I'd combine cell and patrol into the same level, and probably make a squadron into a minimum of 4 troops. I'd also probably make every rank above squadron have a minimum of 3 rather than 2.

You can blame Dungeons and Dragons titled hierarchical tables for that.

The premise is that the CAVALRY are the eyes and ears of the Navy in non critical systems, and can act as troubleshooters, deployed as independent squadrons, basically Aliens, but with more redundancy.

Heinlein had me thinking about the position, title, and rank, of Captain, plus an interest in Renaissance warfare; that's why the Confederation Marines skip that rank, and have majors command companies.

In the rare event that you have two CAVALRY squadrons deployed together, one Captain is senior, possibly major, if multiple squadrons are expected to operate together, especially for an extended period.

These formations would be termed battles, because battalion seems a little lame.

Wings was under consideration.

Next up would be brigading together battles, which isn't supposed to happen, but if it does, the council of captains elect a Grand Captain; or, if foreseen, gets appointed by the regimental colonel.

If a Great Company is gathered on a planet, something has gone very wrong, since by this point, either the local (para)military forces should be dealing with the situation, or Solomani Security Peacekeeper units, and/or a Confederation Army task force.
