So if I got a smuggling container in my body what could I realistically smuggle into prison using it?

I find all this rather eye-watering to comtemplate but sometimes a Traveller has to do what a Traveller has to do...

The dear old Central Supply Catalogue has this augment:

SMUGGLING CONTAINER
A portion of the Traveller’s body is surgically modified to house
a polymer pocket, covered by what appears like normal skin.
Using a trigger, usually looking like a blemish or scar to open,
the pocket can hold roughly 5 kg of mass, but nothing larger
than eight inches in diameter. Under normal circumstances, it
requires a Difficult (10+) Investigate check (1D rounds, INT)
to discover the container when closed.

Smuggling Container TL8 Cr15000

Firstly in the context of the human body 5 KG and 8 inches in diameter (I thought the Imperium was metric? and in any case 8 cm would be more realistic..) is bloody huge.

The one real world example I could find in a short but rather unpleasant google was a Colombian drug mule who inserted a pound of cocaine into two incisions in his thighs - so that is about 450g per thigh and the customs guys still eyeballed that he had weirdly lumpy thighs and caught him...

So we are presumably talking radically shortening someone's intestines or something equally gross and that at a sufficiently hi tech level this would somehow have no medical consequences.

So what can I reasonably get into this massive 5 kg and 8-inch diameter cavity?

I'm thinking a a body pistol, a stealth dagger, lots of plastic explosives, doses of combat enhancing drugs, commdots, a bug?

But at 5 kg you could presumably get an entire mini-armoury in there as long as it can be folded/dismantled and put back together - can you use TL12 3D printers to create a non-metallic Body ACR for instance? (That real world TL7 or whatever we are 3D printers can only make rather crap guns is not really an argument against this as we're talking 3,000 more years of developing this tech...)

The point being that to break someone out of prison as per Rescue on Ruie you need to get sent there - but as it is a rather backward TL6/7 prison they have no scanners other than metal detectors so you probably can get away with this as they are not going to be familiar with the concept of someone being mad enough to have a bloody great artificial cavity excavated out of their body just for smuggling.

With cybernetics being available to the general population, expect scanners specifically for this.

A much smaller concealment might work better and smuggle in something of value to the prison population in order to make your stay easier.

5 kg and 8 (inch) diameter?! *Gets out a ruler and hold next to abdomen.* Even at 8 cm, that would be a very dense item. Where are the internal organs going? The person doing that would have to be VERY practiced at not looking like they're carrying that much internally. Good luck with that Art(performer) task check. Even so, as soon as those things become known there will be physical and scanner checks for unusual internal body arraignments. Maybe this is Traveller's Bag of Holding artifact.

Did same thing with the ruler and just can't visualise where you would fit that 8 inch diameter object that is the size of a football and weighs almost as much as 5 bags of sugar...

0.5 kg and 8 cm - more like a baseball - seems more plausible and might just be big enough space for a dismantled body pistol.

Now visualising the smuggler removing his 5 kg Body ACR part by part and finding he can't actually fire it properly because one of his arms has gone all floppy...

Also obscurely reminded of Jack's posh English girlfriend in 30 Rock who has Hollow Bone Syndrome...

At TL15 or even 12 I'd say all sorts of radical body remodelling is entirely feasible - who needs all those intestines or bones made of bone rather than of hollowed out superspaceplastic anyway?

And of course you have the Total Recall full body disguise suit which I am sure you can pack a lot of stuff into...

But this is a TL8 augment - and a relatively cheap one too.

If I had to try and fix it I'd probably say at TL8 you can get a 0.5kg and 8cm diameter compartment and at each successive TL you add 0.5kg and 1cm diameter.

Indeed - so you'd need a DM equal to the TL of the augment vs that of the sensors.

So a TL8 compartment being scanned on a TL7 world might be at +1 but with TL15 scanners you are screwed unless you got your augment at a similarly hi-tech world where they designed it to have at least a chance of beating sensors at that TL.

But to be realistic whether at personal or starship scale smuggling stuff is for lower tech worlds without sophisticated sensors anyway.

The original idea here is to help someone break out of prison. For that purpose, there's another type of "inside job" that is a bit less unpleasant than this type of "inside job.

Maybe the eight-inch diameter object is a flat disk?

Its the 5 kg weight limit that makes my eyes water...

Next time you are in the supermarket contemplate five 1 kg bags of sugar or flour and where they might be fitted inside your own body.

(you may say guns or communicators are denser than sugar or flour but if they have to be non-metallic to avoid metal detectors that they have even at TL5 then I am not sure how far that applies).
