So I finally priced it out....

sounguru

Mongoose
I sat down and figured out what It would cost to by the entire U.S. midway battle fleet from GHQ ... not to bad $339.85

What got me was the 1/600th scale aircraft were more and there are 2 designs I can't get... a total of $345.26

All together $685.11

So now I just have to figure out which kid to sell.....

Gonna be one sweet fleet though when I am done.... :D

Update make that $737.61 forgot the PTs, Tenders, Oilers, and minesweepers.

FWIW:

Figurehead minis is a 1/6000 scale line of incredibly nice figures.
US at Coral Sea and Midway $75.00

Does not include planes. There is a line of planes from Cap Aero in 1/1200 running 2 for $4 depending on the mini.

I think I'm gonna go this route when all is said and done...

After I get the 1/2400th scale ships and 1/600th scale fighters I plan on doing a smaller scale fleet of the same ships for easier transport and smaller playing areas.

Just to let ya know I can get 6 tumbling dice airplanes like the F4 wildcat for $3.99 might be cheaper than the ones you are looking at, but a larger scale so i don't know if they would work for ya.

*update* just checked out the Cap Areo Planes may go that route a little more in scale to the 1/2400 ships and run about the same price for the same # of planes. Which I need a crap load of.....

65 Ships (1 I can not find a mini for) + 354 planes (of which 39 I can not find a mini for) = a lot of squinty eyes and long hours of painting enjoyment...

Only to probably turn around and sell the whole blasted thing since that is my habit. Buy it, paint it, sell it, do it again...... :D Biggest problem with being a pianter more than a player and lack of said players in my area. I still need to finish all the commish work I have right now before I plunk down on a new project anyway.

I have just about the entire Allied and Japanese fleets for Coral Sea. Got about 11 Jap Transports to go for the Port Moresby invasion fleet. It's taken a while and sad thing is that all these ships will never be on a game table together. It was a compulsive obsessive thing.

I plan on at least one game with all of them just for fun.... I know a guy who is working on a Jap fleet for Midway and we are talking about trying to find a place at Gencon to hammer out the entire attack of midway with a few modified rules from VaS to actually bring the details closer to the way the battle actually progressed.

I have the pearl harbor fleets for both the US and the Japs in 1:6000. Coral Sea/Midway may be my next investment.

I really do love this scale.

Dont do 1/600 aircraft, they really look aweful (sorry to anyone that thinks otherwise... but seriously!) when you put them alongside 1/2400 ships.

1/1200 scale and they look really nice. Just base up 2-3 aircraft on a stand to represent a flight of aircraft. Just big enough to get nice details, but small enough that the forced perspective looks okay.

I've used 1/700 plastic models with 1/3000 and they look great. I guess its all to do with the fineness of the plakkie models compared with the chunkier metal ones.

I'm probably gonna end up doing both sets of planes .... The 1/600th planes will be indivdually mounted so we can actually fight air battles if we want to. The 1/1200 scale will be mounted in flights.

We are looking at using the areodrone rules with some mods to run dogfights and by using the 1/600th scale there we can reduce the size of the table needed way down.

If any one knows some good dogfighting rules let me know because we are always looking for new ideas to make it more realistic to how the actual or fictional battles are fought.

So what we would do is have the dogfight before the actual ship attacks on a seperate board...... That way the # of actual attacking planes is adjusted by what makes it thru the fighter screen. Then comes the flak screen we are working on a mod for that area to.

Just one of the ideas we are kicking around.

The forthcoming Air War 1940 from Wessex Games would be ideal (once I've finished it - which has almost happened!)

Would love to see it.

I downloaded some very quick aircombat rules and I'm modifing them to work in a VaS type game. Plus also it could be played as a stand alone.

Give it a few months and they'll probably be available here through Wargaming Online (the modern version of the rules already is)

Well sounguru, it could be worse. You might have decided to collect the USN and IJN fleets and aircraft for the Battle of the Philippine Sea. They had 24 carriers (etc.) there and over 1700 planes.

Figure I will get there some day......

Hey BuShips you are in my neck of the woods I'm north of ya near the great state of Seattle maybe when I get the fleet up and running we will have to get together and see how many planes we can put down on a table at once....

OK, let's keep that in mind. I'm about 2.5 hrs. south of Seattle (I-5, at Kelso/Longview). Oh, and welcome to the Mongoose forum. :D

Although I skipped Dragonflight last year (first time in over a decade), I might very well be going and looking (or demoing) for VaS and B5 ACTA games. Dragonflight is the longest running game Con in the NW. Heck, you might have already gone to some of them. Let's keep a meeting in mind sometime and get some games in.

I know the area you are in I'm a photographer by trade so I have spent a lot of time in the St. Helens area (although not in the last few years)

Haven't ever been to dragonflight, thought I might try and catch it this year but I will probably be going as a CBT/CSO rep. Sure I can squeeze time in for a game or 2 just remember I'm still really wet behind the ears. No it is not moss.....

Will be at Gencon again this year so if anyone from the boards makes it look for me in the Catylast Game Booth. I hope to have ships in tow....
