Skyhook, Slingshot, or Viking?

Mongoose
I might be wrong but I thought that Mongoose produced a Skyhook Retrieval Boat model when the game was early in its production then it just disappeared does anyone know what happen or if they are going to produce it again or any of the Fleet craft such as the Slingshot or Viking? Also, has anyone tried to scratch-build any of these vessels?

They did have a prototype, but it was held back with the other models when it was decided to shift to preassembled/prepainted figures. I'm fairly certain that once the kinks are worked out with the Evo version of SST you'll probably see some of the "flyers" rolled out. The phrase is "Stay tuned".

As I had understood it, they had planned to make the air assets available in the first waves of SST:Evo. Whether this will still be the case remains to be seen, but I think that they are aware that people would love to get their hands on them. Plus there was also talk about a skinnie air unit as well, though the name of it slips my mind at the moment.

Part of me is starting to wonder if Mongoose just has something against flying vehicles. It looks like they delayed the BFevo line just before they released those flyers as well! It's almost like the flyers some how curse the production line. That Slingshot prototype they had was looking pretty awesome though. I hope they get those "kinks" worked out!

Anyone have link for a pic of the Slingshot prototype? Also, I been kinda out of the loop with this SST Evo and the pre-painted minis. Are they going to be made of that rubbery plastic like the Star Wars miniatures?

Sorry, for some reason my link isn't working, but if you go to google images and search for slingshot+starship troopers there are several good shots available.

Game Trade Magazine listed what looked like four air units, one for each species, in wave 3. (The one due out in October.) Obviously the date is obsolete, but they've been fairly consistent on which wave is which so far. And I don't see adding air units before wave 3 anyway, even if the rulebook comes out before any of the minis: there's just too many ground-pounders to release, and this is supposed to be an infantry-centric game.

Grrr. Knew I would figure out a link as soon as I signed out. From http://www.gametrademagazine.com/PDFS/GTM_90_PDFs/GTM90_games.pdf :

Arachnid Rippler Bugs $44.95
Forth Altos Gunship $39.95
MI Slingshot Drop Boat $44.95
Skinnie Starlight Skimmers $39.95

Interesting...

I am glad to see the Slingshot is (theorectically at least...) first of the MI air assets, but I am surprised. I had always thought that they were going to do the Skyhook first.

This whole thing is just ridiculous. It's saying 'hey we have something here everyone wants but we will not release it until... hum, say a year (if it goes on like now add another year). Who needs money?".

Yeah, while I'll sure not defend any of these delays, I'll bet the move to the prepaints put all of their models on hold including the dropships. Even though it was almost tooled up for production, that model wasn't with the same company that was going to make the ships. In addition to offering these new models prepainted they of course has to be in the condition of being preassembled as well. Thus, once they had made the critical decision to switch manufacturers all of the kits were put on hold.

I just wish that the ships had come out before the "new plan" was settled upon. I'm more than a gamer; I'm a model nut. I can live with the new PPMs as I'll just focus on (guess what?) terrain to feed my creative side.

Yeah, I would take a kit over any pre-painted model anyday. Something about pre-painted minis and models seems a little juvenile to me. I see 12 year old kids playing games like Mechwarrior and Star Wars at my local game store and I look at those games as introduction games to the world of miniature gaming. Then you graduate and pick your brushes and paints and dive head first into a game like SST with all its complexities. To me, pre-painted miniature games are one step above board games. Anyone can go buy an army and rule set off the shelf but it takes a dedicated gamer to buy, assemble, and paint an army. Plus, its that much more rewarding when you see your custom painted force of MI slaughter there first Arachnids or vice versa. Thats my opinion, feel free to disagree.

Can't wait to see a slingshot wreck sight ;)

You will now be rewarded by paying a premium for prepainted minis to repaint...re-pre-painted minis as it were :P

I'm a dedicated gamer, but I'm perfectly happy to have prepaints. Saves me a lot of time and hassle, and I don't feel guilty about playing with unpainted units or have to wait until I feel the urge to assemble those next 20 warriors.

As for the aircraft, the plan is to release them in Wave 3. Mongoose wanted to fix the mistake of not getting them out sooner the first time around. (Lots of people kept waiting for the dropships before they would get into the game.) Of course, the current situation is putting things on hold, but from what I understand getting at least some air units out is still a priority based on what they learned the last time around.

As for the Slingshot over the Skyhook first, IIRC they originally planned to do the Skyhooks first, but when they decided to do the prepaints they decided to do a poll to see which one would get released first. The Slingshot won by a large margin. (Much to my chagrin. I want Vikings, darnit!)

I think the prepaints are a mixed blessing. The benefit is quicker to-table time. In this ADD age, this is important. From personal experience explaining these games, I would say 99% of people that come by a game table and ask a few questions, and seem genuinely interested, get immediately turned off and move on as soon as you mention the assembly/painting part of the hobby.

On the downside, for the "hardcores", their mini prices just went up. However, modding the prepaints shouldn't be much different than modding a fixed-pose metal mini. Poseable plastics will be missed.

Ugh, where was this poll? From a marketing perspective, I would have asked preference on the skyhook or Viking only. Put the movie stuff out first! People recognize that stuff. Use the license that people recognize the most, you can then add the more in depth stuff later.

The poll was in the SST Forum. I don't know if it's still buried in there or if it was deleted when the forum was cleaned out.

From what I've seen so far, the prepaints aren't significantly more than unpainted metals provided by other companies. Factoring cost of supplies for assembly, prep, and painting, they're just about the same. That doesn't factor in the money value of time (which is subjective, of course).

I think both have a place. I really enjoy painting vehicles, terrain, hero models, commanders, weapons team- interesting stuff i'll only do a few times per army. Rank and file bores the crap out of me!! That's where i want prepaints. That said i'm more a gamer then a modeler.

I really enjoyed being able to field a BF:Evo army from the box but then painting up maruaders and pathfinders was really rewarding.

It's a funny old world

I think you're confusing gamers with hobbyists: dedicated gamers are people who are dedicated to playing games. It's right there in the name. A dedicated gamer would rather play another game than spend two hours painting a fourth Warrior Bug swarm. If they can't find another person to play with, they'd rather read through the rules and uncover the complexities of the game, or make new army lists. Assembling and painting armies is a hobby; I think it's a fine hobby, and it's one I wish I had time to do, but that's true of a dozen other hobby choices out there.

(My opinion, of course, and you did say I should feel free to disagree with yours... :) )
