Size of players' fleets - curious

Feel your pain about having to collect stuff so others can play...thats how I ended up with all mine. Hoping to get people to play, I bought all the races too.

That's why I have all the fleets except Brakiri (which I sold to you as I recall ;)). We have not played in over a year since a friend of mine died (he was one of the main B5 proponents around here), but maybe sometime. At the very least the models are cool, though I may get rid of some of them as I do have a lot.

For the OP: no idea how many models I have since most are still unbuilt in boxes/blisters, but I know I have easily 50 or so each of ACtA scale Centauri, Vorlons, Shadows, Drakh and maybe Narn. If I had to estimate I probably have 300-400+ total ships, not including fighters, but I don't know that.

But its alright, I can afford it, after all Warhammer 40k has my love but it isn't getting any more of my money :) Now I can afford all kinds of things!

I've noticed that as well now that GW have priced me out of their games (still play, just don't buy). It actually allowed me to get a Flames of War: Vietnam Air Cav army that I've been thinking about. The money they might have gotten from me on Dark Eldar went to Battlefront instead :). The best part is based on what the DE would have cost I had money left over to buy an entire ECW Royalist army from Warlord as well. Bonus!

Cheers, Gary

I personally wouldn't pay battlefront prices either. They're cheaper than GW but still silly, especially when WWII models are made by loads of different companies.

That said, I'm building up my FoW army in 10mm rather than 15mm.

Edit: Oh, and for 15mm check out Forged in Battle

Yes, BF are silly as well, but the next decent fig maker for 15mm WWII that I found was Peter Pig and their infantry is about the same cost as BF (their tanks are somewhat better depending on which ones you are looking at though). The advantage of the latter is simply that you get most if not all of what you need in discrete boxes/blisters and PP makes you just buy a bunch of ind. packs. I find it's just easier to get the BF ones since the cost is about the same. That said I will definitely check out Forged in Battle. There's also some new 15mm plastics I've seen that are quite good and much cheaper as well (forget the company name), but they don't yet have a large enough range to cover the armies I'd be interested in. You also have to remember I'm in the US and a lot of the 15mm WWII fig manufacturers are UK-based and have to be imported, thus the cost and finding a distributor that carries them becomes an issue.

I did find some 15mm plastic model choppers that are half what BF wants so those are what I am getting. Just need to get the door gunners/crew from PP to make them look right.

Could it possible be the Plastic Soldier Company you were thinking of?

Indeed is was :). Hopefully they will continue to expand their range since their tanks are awesome. The infantry I've seen so far (Russians) look a little flat and they are slightly larger than normal 15mm figs, but the detail level is good I think.

This year should see them expand their 15mm plastic range quite a bit, brits, us, infantry carriers and more tanks, apparently!

You are correct my friend!! :)

I have the big 5 fleet boxes, EA and Minbari reinforcement packs, some extra EA and Minbo ships, the ANcients, some Technomage ships, jump gates, civilian pack, all unpainted.

There's your next project then, LBH - now you've started on your ACTA: NA fleets, you can go back and paint your ACTA: B5 fleets!

Another question regarding fleets - since the original topic seems to have died down:

How do you all track the speed of your ships/fighters on the table top?

I've tried to put a die behind each model/counter but it gets to be a pain to move all those each turn (in big games) and the chances for several of those dice to get "bumped" by a "furry rogue comet" running across the table or by the rolling of a fistful of attack dice or just the table getting bumped by the players is quite high.

I print out my fleets from Burger's Fleet Designer:
http://www.ibisfightclub.co.uk/pp/CardFleetShow.asp
(Actually I made up a "fleet" consisting of one of every type of ship in the fleet, printed out the lot, and laminated it.)

Note the ship's speed on the record sheet, then you don't need a marker by the model. Fighter speeds don't change because they can't take the critical hit which would reduce their speed - if they're hit, they die. :)

.

Do you mean via crit effects if so usually write on the sheet.

For fighters nothing effect their movement.............

otherwise there is not reason to track the speed unless you are running through an asteroid field and that only matters if you fail!!

Dont forget about Epicarmycard.com
tho some are missing...

I use these cool medical clipboards that are clear plastic:

Mine actually have an internal sleeve to slide in the cards and then dry erase the board.

...and not sure why you'd track speed...

Ah! I've been playing the game wrong!

I've been playing that the Speed stat listed is the maximum that ship can move(which is per the rules) but took that word "maximum" to mean you could also move the ship anywhere between zero and that number.

For example, take two Nova DN. I would have one moving speed 4 and one moving speed 6 (the max), or a two T-bolt flights - one moving speed 12 and the other speed 10...which is why I was having trouble tracking the speed of everything.

And yes, I could write the speed on each ship sheet but my group likes to be able to see what each ship is moving without having to ask about every ship every time (which if I was playing right, would not be an issue) - 'cause after all, this is the future and we have fancy tracking/computer devices, right?

You do not have to move at the maximum speed although if you want to move < 1/2 speed I think you need to use the "All stop" command.

Why does it matter how far they moved? In general distance moved does not affect the performance of the ship unless they are on special orders. So just record the special orders if necessary.

Maybe maybe not

Basically a fighter can move anything from zero to its full movement in its movement phase

Normally a Ship must move at least half its current speed and upto its full speed

There are exceptions to this - if a ship is adrift it just moves half of its current speed straight forward.
If the All Stop Order is used - the ship can move anything from Zero up to half its movement
If the All stop and pivot order is used - it may not move.

The actual distance moved should not matter unless the ship is moving through an asteroid or someone is trying to board you. We normally put a dice or counter by ships that have moved to say that they have done so, others do the reverse, some don't bother.

Given that pre-measuring is allowed - I always find its easier to agree things as they are done - so I move here and am in range and arc to hit that ship etc.
