SIZ question

Ok, how do the various sizes compare to each other roughly please, in real terms?
Eg, siz 13 average human, siz 23 for a scorpion man.

I am curious about this as well. Some sort of guideline would be useful, especially when creating our own races and monsters. What gets a little tricky is that SIZ is more of an indicator of mass than height, so a shorter than average guy (ie dwarf) could be oddly massive across the back and shoulders, with a SIZ score actually above average, so the stat itself can be a bit misleading if you think squarely in terms of height. Some sort of table showing general height/weight/mass comparisons would be great in the upcoming Legend book.

There's some discussion on this from another site here:

http://www.therpgsite.com/showthread.php?t=19333

I think there may be a SIZ equivalency table in the BRP rulebook (which shares basic characteristics with RQII/Legend)

But really this question is frequently asked and a bit of Google Fu will probably find some useful guidelines.

I know that the original design idea (RQ in the far past) was for SIZ to be a 'universal' stat: a SIZ 13 Centaur was the same 'size' as a SIZ 13 human. While a good idea, it didn't really work well and game mechanics deviated badly from that rule.

There have also been periodic discussions over at basicroleplaying. THe most recent I found was:

http://basicroleplaying.com/showthread.php/2373-Adjusting-SIZ?highlight=conversion

But I think someone (maybe 2 years ago) extended the table for mass and SIZ conversions. Some searching (or asking a question) might surface it for you.

Good ol' RQ3 had an extended SIZ table (P28 of the Games Workshop hardback starter book edition). Goes from 1-100 giving SIZ and equivalent weight in Kg and lbs, handy for anyone outside Europe not familiar with metric). I don't think anyone followed it slavishly, most of us looked at the stats of similarly sized published creatures, but it provides a useful rule of thumb estimate. Scanning it produced a 'too big file size warning' for the forum (Ironically) I'm afraid and typing it out would take about a century at my speed assuming I didn't die of boredom first. I assume I'm not treading on anyone's copyright toes as Mongoose have RQ" and Leg End if I do manage to type it up/copy it?

I think there was also a nice silhouette SIZ comparison piccie somewhere. I seem to remember a Cthulhu picture along similar lines.

I've been wondering about giving them a rating according to height and weight.

So far I've been thinking along the lines that height starts off at 3' 8" and every pt of Size is doubled before being added in inches with weight being using Size as the base with modifiers applied for Str, Dex and Con (Strength-10, 10-Dexterity and (Constitution/2)-5) with the initial Size base being Size multiplied by itself in pounds.

So Size 12 would be 3'8" +2' or 5' 8" and Siz 18 being 6' 8" and weight being a base of 144lb for Size 12 and 10 for Str, Dex & Con and 324lbs for Size 18 with the same modifiers for Str, Dex & Con.

The only alterations I was thinking of is that the player could have their character be taller at the cost of being lighter so they could be equivalent of Size 14 (6' tall) but be Size 10 in weight (bae 100lbs) and vice versa since it is possible for a character to either gain or lose weight and therefore effect Size accordingly, but height changes should be the part they find near impossible to alter unless they start so young that their character hasn't reached their true adult height.

Sorry for all of the ramble with my luck i'll reread the thread and discover I've completely miss the point of this thread!

Sorry size 13 would be 5' 10" tall and base 169lbs in weight and Size 33 would be 9' 2" tall and base weight of 1089 lbs without modifiers for stats.

And according to page 11 of the 3rd edition advanced runequest book:

Size 13 is between 77-83kg and 169-184lbs and Size 33 is 436-475kg and 960-1049lbs well I was close!

Now to find out the height...

I agree, I just use it as a general guideline; still, Legend would do well to have a simple, even vague, list of siz examples. I think some of the above examples are too granular. I look at Siz as mass more than height, so if a dense, broad-shouldered, barrel-chested dwarf who weighed an uncanny 245, I would not hesitate to give him a Size 13 to 14, even though he may not be even 5' tall. On the other hand, I may have a character that is 6' tall, but emaciated, a skeleton of a man, and give him a siz of 9 or so. As this relates to Str, I always imagine your Str rating as how strong you are for your Siz. You may have a 17 Str, but a Siz of 7....maybe your a hobbit.....and you would be considered very strong...for your Siz. That is why I really, really like the damage modifier system, because it takes both of those into account.
