Snubbery: Common Ammunitions Types

Ball
Default, costs one and a half starbux per round, which is three times the cheapest handgun ammunition in the market, four or five times, if you count Central Supply advanced combat rifle.

Low Penetration
Seems bean baggy; probably better out of the barrel of a shotgun or grenade launcher, and since it costs the same as pellet, I think I'd opt out, since given the choice, I'd appreciate the lethality and effect of that at close range, since every shot has to count, the diamond only holds four, and at that range, you wouldn't get that many opportunities anyway.

Pellet
Penetration is reduced by Spread, and spread is rated between one to four; however barrel length appears to add additional two options, and how does the choke work? I tend to think that the barrel score is default, adding a choke controls it between one to four, which presumably is free. Considering that ten metre drop off if applied, you're going to hit something.

Flechette
Speaking of which, with range actually limited to ten metres, this seems made for the Saturn Night Special, though damage reduction doesn't thrill me, the vermin won't care; plus four to attack within five metres and quickdraw, should help you to shoot that snake before it strikes.

Enhanced Wounding
Law enforcement uses this, so I doubt that legality is actually an issue, but damage is, at six to twenty one potential; it costs double, but likely to immobilize your attacker.

Distraction
I don't know about this, especially at four times the cost, and what appears to be rather minimal effect; a flare round would actually be useful.

Incendiary
It costs six times more, but what exactly is it supposed to ignite? The other purpose is for aiming, and at the probable range, it's not going to help that.

Explosive
Costs the same an incendiary, but this ensures stuff will actually blow up, and potential damage is two to twenty seven, which should knockdown a grizzly, plus ignite anything flammable, and distract anyone hit.

Gas
In theory, a non lethal option; I think I prefer an actual grenade.

High Explosive Armour Piercing
The most expensive round at fifteen starbux per; armour piercing doesn't work for low velocity firearms, so it needs an assist. This seems a last resort option, though probably popular against uninvited boarders.

Survival Gun

A. I think I've gone as far as I can for snubbery, at the low end.

B. Single shot low accuracy at twenty six starbux is about it, certainly cheaper than the listed Zip Gun at fifty starbux.

C. With handgun ammunition, and barrels, you're looking ten and twenty five metres as accuracy/range mileposts.

D. Inaccurate as a low quality trait only takes effect after ten metres.

E. Pellet ammunition gets the spread bonus upto it's base range as well.

F. Which with a short barrel is four metres, your outstretched arm plus two person's length, or three one and a half metre squares away.

Survival Gun

G. A SIB Gun works best with the appropriate ammunition and getting within four metres of the target.

H, Or the target getting four metres of you.

I. If it's a grizzly, you need an explosive round.

J. If it's a bunny, pellets should ensure you hit it, even if it spooks and makes a hopper.

K. Getting within four metres of said bunny, that might be a challenge.

Survival Gun

L. I don't think a derringer configuration actually simplifies operation.

M. The idea may have been that the revolver cylinder doesn't have unneeded contact, by removing it, and does harken back to black powder technology with caseless bullets, though cased, in this case.

N. Being inaccurate is a deliberate option to cut the cost in half, since it's not envisioned to have an engagement range further than ten metres.

O. Bolt action is probably the simplest mechanism, besides a thumb tack and a rubber band.

P. In a way, I think it's suitable for people who find a sudden need to deal with vermin, and if you're desperate, assassinate someone.

Survival Gun

Q. The problem with a resolver is that in three millenia from now, is that it's kinda pointless, compared to a semi automatic magazine fed pistol.

R. Though, apparently, there are semi automatic revolvers.

S. By the design mechanics, it's a way to half costs, if a limited ammunition capacity isn't a liability.

T. For handguns, it's between the cylinder and an internal magazine, that needs to be manually activated.

U. In theory, if the internal magazine isn't fixed, you can leave the bottom open and elongate it.

The Most Fundamental Problem of Gravity is Solved

If you are familiar with Newton's bucket, you may skip to 6:10.

Until recently, I had not realized the flash of genius of Dennis Sciama who linked inertia and gravity in a Machain way already in 1953.

That would depend on the edition.

As I understand the current one, it's Morse code - dots and dashes, dots being pulse lasers.

Going by spacecraft scale, the pulse version has double damage and range.

However, I rather suspect that at that power output, it would be subject to overheating.

The Sun: Liquid Metallic Hydrogen

This video gives an overview on the Liquid Metallic Hydrogen model of the Sun, developed by Pierre-Marie Robitaille.

I would think that would make it the opposite of a gas giant.

Pressure creates blackness, so black holes?

New computer will mimic human brain -- and I'm kinda scared

A lab in Australia is building a new supercomputer that will for the first time both physically resemble a human brain, and perform as many operations, about 228 trillion per second. It will be the biggest neuromorphic computer ever and the scary bit is how few operations this are. Yes, how few. Let me explain.

It looks like AI will kill Quantum Computing

Yann LeCun, the AI chief of Meta, has a surprisingly sane attitude to quantum computing. This deserves celebration and also investigation because he’s making a very good point.

Artificial intelligence will calculate jump transitions?

Not in Traveller.
