Ship Design Philosophy

yeah that will work for a fat trader just make the cargo section modular, with sections for modular staterooms so you can adapt it as needed.

Hercules cargo capacity:
C-130J-30 cargo hold: length, 55 feet (16.76 m); width, 119 inches (3.02 m); height, 9 feet (2.74 m). Rear ramp: length, 123 inches (3.12 m); width, 119 inches (3.02 m)
92 passengers or
64 airborne troops or
74 litter patients with 5 medical crew or

6 pallets or
2–3 Humvees or
2 M113 armored personnel carriers

Basically twelve squares, by two squares.
About 10 dT cargo hold and can carry 92 passengers or 2 APCs. Far more than in Traveller...

One option is cattle class, literally.

That's two people per square, which seems rather better than the above four guys per square.

Life support cost would seem to be one hundred twenty five schmuckers per "passenger".

Instead of cages, won't the hamsters be happier running around wheels?

Spaceships: Armaments and Can Opener

Since smallcraft weapons are in any event reduced to adjacent range, you arm your fighters with a drill laser.

While the dee emm three penalty is a bit disconcerting, if you hit, you might disembowel the enemy ship.

an average gunner still has a fairly decent chance of hitting with a -3 dmhit percentages will be low but not beyond reason.

I've build a few pods with Laser Drill for salvage, mining, etc...since they are built for high-risk/hi-hazard operations giving them good armor seemed reasonable. even with very low thrust they could be nasty if they waited till a pirate ship or boarding craft got close and then closed in to use their drill. Just drop yer cargo hatch and "drift' slightly so the hatch is out of view the pod can slip out using the much larger ship for cover.

if the hostile ship moves to adjacent range to board or launch small craft the pod can get into close combat maneuvering before the hostile ca get a shot off. If there is a boarding party in vacc suits pop goes the weasel....., or a small craft close lock onto the hull and phhhweeeeeepppppppppppp cut open an airlock/cargo hatch...if you're really clever just bring a few guys in combat EVA suits with grav belts along for the ride. say secured to grab handles and wearing mag boots on the exterior of the pod, presto improvised boarding boat.

This is new.

I was looking for a picture where the Millennium Falcon pop gun drops down, when I came across this.

yeah I've seen that before. It's a modified Light Stock Freighter. Basically docking clamp or External cargo clamps added to the design. Someone took advantage of the shape of the YT-1300 and used a bit of imagination.

Is this official or just a fan made thing?

Either way, it is a fun idea. :D

I think its a fan piece..not sure though.

But it is a clever way to use the shape of the ship..the slot between the mandibles, and the offset cockpit lend themselves well to the idea.

I agree, I like the idea quite a bit. Very clever. :D

For a freighter, the Millennium Falcon carries remarkably little of it.

It may explain the excessive performance of it's engines.

Even before Solos modifications, a Stock YT-1300 light freighter has oversized engines. it was definitely a ship built for "other than standard" business models

Should persuade Lego to make Traveller ship kits.

Bonus: easy to modify them.

I'd go broke in short order....

A freind of mine has an idea he wants me to work on..basically a sort of Lego ship system pre-built sections that "snap together" to rapidly refit a ship within hours.

basically Main hull with docking clamps. then smaller ships with various systems but no drives Instead of needing heavy equipment and a starport to swap out modular sections of the hull the ship docks with the new section and is on its way.

So sort of like the modular cutter but with all the ship systems being modules?
