Ship Cards

I am going to use the layout I did for my ACTA cards as a basis for the VaS cards

Here is a sample of the Takao Class Cruiser

In order to make sure that I get off my butt and finish them, unlike my ACTA cards, I will eventually be offering these for sale via PayPal. Probably for $1 a fleet.

Excellent, let me know when they are ready.

I think both designs are excellent, and certainly would be interested in them (I'm a complete lummox when it comes to computer graphics.)
I like the inclusion of the "Priority" level information: very handy.

Those are both excellent designs. I think I like Holdens the best though. I would definately buy those, if you would produce them. Pixelgeek, I would buy yours as well but I have a suggestion. Put a space in there above class, where you can write your ships name and a space at the bottom for damage notes. I got money for whichever of you puts them out first. :)

I'll be coming out with damage/critical/action counters just like I did for ACTA as well so you won't need space for writing in damage.

A ship name space as a good idea though so I'll drop one of those in

It's a legitimate concern, but based on the leniancy they showed with the ACTA pages I really don't think they will have a problem with these.
Those are free. Charging for something designed solely for use in Mongoose's game may well be very different. At the very least, this should be officially submitted to Matt for approval.

I think you're playing with fire by charging for them. They are Mongoose's intellectual property. I got Matt's explicit permission to publish the ACTA stats on my ship viewer, although I have assumed this covers VAS as well since most of the stats were given in S&P anyway.

If Mongoose don't sell them and have stated that they do not intend to produce them then a small fee to cover costs shouldn't be a problem but it is probably wise to run it past Mongoose first.

holden88, I would not mind getting the template for your ship cards. I can put the info in myself if you feel you will be going against copyrights.

Continued to work on my cards some more. Here's the newest Exeter card:
ExeterCard2.jpg

I added a box to write down a unit ID in case someone is using a numbered counter or something (this will really come in handy for the more generic ships like destroyers and civilian vessels).

Added the priority level for the ship.

Added a spot to record the ships command rating.

Changed to square damage boxes (looks better I think).

I'll continue to refine the cards.

I don't like using damage tokens as they tend to clutter up the board. I think I will make special action tokens though.

Hmm.. maybe I'll put in a box where you can write in what special action that ship is conducting that turn. Or should that just be written in the notes?

Also, do you guys think the damage boxes should be numbered or grouped into clusters of five or something?

Yeah, I don't like tokens either. Really detracts from the visual appeal of the game IMO.

It depends on how thay are done. I agree that bits of cardboard don't look too good, but id the tokens are models in their own right then they can add to the game. For example, the "Fire and Fury" ACW rules have all sorts of markers but they recommend using single figure models (e.g. a charging officer for a "breakthrough" marker, a reloading soldier for a "low on ammo" marker).

Looks very good, holden. Keep up the good work, and please let us know when they're available. 8)

I'm not a big fan of tokens either, though that is currently how we're tracking damage. (Colored beads on a little stand with a central post. Armati players, what can I say? )

Cards like this would help a lot.

The previous ACTA markers that Pixelgeek did (you can see them on my old site and in Vassal ACTA) were for some special orders and critical effects, like speed -2 or -1AD.

The USN cards I did use a similar set of boxes like the ACTA cards for crits...even had a block to write the number of fires on board currently...

I'll probably work up some more but I'm waiting until I get some good line drawings of the ships. I'm thinking of picking up one of the old ONI books (history on CD ROM) with foreign fleet details.

For Fires would a Cotton Fire marker work?

Just a little cotton, painted to look like flames with smoke?

That would be very pretty on the table, but I would think it would get a bit cluttered still if you used 1 marker per fire. Maybe dropping one on a ship and keeping track of how many fires are going on in the notes section of the roster would work. I have seen 6-8 fire raging at one time and that would be alot of cotton on the ship.

I believe they sell the "firey cotton" for FOW. My FLGS has some that are glued to pennies to keep them from wandering. :)

I'd like to see a link to VAS counters, preferably something around 1"

I'm going to use the new version of the ship rosters for my demo this week, but will probably use someone's ship cards for tournaments etc.
