Has anyone gotten to the 2,000 point range with their games yet? How do you think the squad rules change the game as far as init sinking and ships blowing up faster?

Going by previous editions they should in some ways speed up the game as squadrons of ships fireing at a single target will often kill it outright.

In sinking is harder to judge as small single ships will still provide that ability

We have done several battles of 2,000 points+ per side.

While they do take longer than a 500 point battle, it is not a proportional increase.
Our last 2500 point game took about 3 1/2 hours and was Klingons versus Kzinti.

At Nashcon, we did a 4,500 point a side battle. (roughly 30 ships a side)
Even teaching new players, we played 5 complete turns in less than 8 hours - and much of the time was actually spent looking for the correct record locarion to record damage than actually playing the game.

so yes, ships do blow up faster.

As for init sinking... it really doesn't change things.
If you run squadrons and your opponent doesn't, your opponent has the initiative advantage... but you're going to be blowing his ships up faster than he is yours and many of his will die before they get to fire. Then, the intiative sink advantage will not matter.

Thats what I was thinking, so it the 3 ship squadron preferred, or do you mix it up between 2 and 3 ship squads to provide a little more buffer for initiative?

Yes!

It's player preference really.
We're still playing around with squadron composition.
Some of our group likes to field three identical units together...
Some of us like to pair a small and a medium with good firing arcs with a larger unit...
Some of us like to field some two ship squadrons ot attempt to capitalize on the initiative...

Don't keep your squadrons through the game. Split your squadrons to have more units than your enemy.

Arent you supposed to keep the squadron for whole game?

could be wrong thoughl. slightly drunk so memory is not 100% reliable.
