Rules question re: drones on Fed ships used as ADD

Recently played a Fed vs Klingon senario with my bro. I was confused on this point and wanted clarification.

A Kling with 4 dice of drones attacks a Fed with 2 dice of drones (that are being used for defence that turn).

Do you kill two dice of drones with your drones and deal with the other two with whatever you have or do you roll 4 dice to kill the drones and lose dice of drones if you roll 1s as with the anti drone trait?

We played it as the former not the latter.

You roll one die against each incoming drone. ALL the incoming drones are automatically destroyed, however if ANY of the dice you rolled is a "1", you lose 1 off the combined drone rack rating of the Fed ship (not one off the rating for each "1"). This permanently reduces the Fed's ADD rating against future drone salvoes (even in the same turn), and permanently reduces it's drone rating if you used the combined drone rack in offensive mode in a future turn.

So it would be the latter option you mentioned. :)
 
Both are correct.

If you are using the drones as the Anti-Drone trait, you will roll 4 dice and your drones are reduced by 1 if you roll any ones. The anti-drone trait is still available for the rest of the turn, assuming you don't roll ones on subsequent attacks.

If you are purely using the drones to shoot down incoming drones on a one-for-one basis, you shoot down 2, then must deal with the other two with phasers and/or tractors. Your drones will have been fired and will not be available for attack or defence for the rest of the turn.
