can anyone recommend any of the rpg books that have really good background info or dating info?

do any of the books have stories or story elements to start campaigns with?

Try the Earth Alliance Fact Book and the EarthForce Campaign Guide, both 1st Edition but full of nice litte dates and campaign ideas...

Indeed, the EA factbook has a lot of that but I would also recomand Free Mars. It didn't interest me much but I bought it because it was 50% off and it turned out to become my favorite book. I never planned on using Mars before but now I find most of my ideas revolve aroud it at some point. There is A LOT of background info in that book.

excellent. thanks for the info. i'm working on a babylon 5 timeline and i thought these books might help.

do any of the rpg books cover the tv movies, novels and comics?

I see where every season has a book and crusade has one...

Legend of the Rangers is covered in 3 articles in Signs and Portents. I don't think the other movies are really covered though there are references to them where appropriate (usually).

Also, keep your eyes open to future books that look at some of the movies in official printed material.

Every book that I have ever done I have tried to make sure the dates all match up and are pointed out as specific as I could.

I have no idea if this helps you at all, but there is a rather basic timeline in the Guide to the Station boxed set.

Also, this is probably the best B5 timeline I have ever seen:
