An incredible loss to contemporary science fiction. He was exploring territory (post-scarcity societies) which most other writers today can't even see, and even the greats of days gone by had difficulties handling.

I've had monthly direct debits to charities (Cancer Research UK, The Big Issue, Amnesty International, British Red Cross) for some time now And I take stuff to charity shops on occasion.

I must sadly admit that I have not read any of Mr. Banks' books. I have several downloaded onto my Ereader, but just haven't gotten around to them...

That is going to change right now.

It's a wonderful setting, and a perfect really-high-end setting for traveller; once AI, nanotech and general ability-to-tell-the-laws-of-physics-to-sit-down-and-shut-up reach their peak.

Plus, the ships are awesome.
