Revised Chronos Fregatte

Hmmm, just had a crazy thought!

Why not ditch the turret mounted Railguns?

Most EA ships rely on broadsides so why not add in 4AD railguns in both Port and Starboard arcs?

I would have done so, but the Chronos is called an "attack frigate" and those things usually do not tend to have weapons concentrated in broadsides.

id).Well if compared to the Artemis it is still inferior in speed, hitpoints and firepower. The ONLY advantage it has over the Artemis is it's hull 6. Nothing else.
It also has twice as many interceptors as well as AF 2. Given that Interceptors are much better on a Hull 6 ship than a Hull 5 one, I think it compares favourably in terms of survivability.

The loss of the missile rack sucks a bit. A big advantage of the Olympus is the ability to reach out and prod an enemy 30" away. However the ships fulfil slightly different roles. I see the Olympus as a light ship of the line. The fluff claims the Hyperion was the EA's first multi-purpose ship but in game terms the Olympus is pretty well rounded.

By the Crusade era, the focus of the EA has moved up to Battle PL. The skirmish ships are no longer independent vessels, they are there to support the big guns. They are pretty tough initiative sinks with turreted railguns.

They are a bit weak for the PL but I think +2AD on the pulse cannons would pretty much fix the Chronos. It is certainly not the weakest Skirmish PL ship and it fulfils a niche in the fleet.

I have to say I think one of the big problems with the current Chronos is people thinking it's the old Chronos.

I've got into lots of fights on the table where I've merrily sent in the Chronos as though it was it's previous 'hard as nails' Raid version and then watched it die horribly!

That being said, I do think that it could use either some more firepower, or more damage and crew.

I tend to agree. Too many people are thinking in terms of the old chronos. I personally think it is a dandy little ship. It is a little low on health and crew but it makes up for it with a hull 6. It isn't the quickest in its priority but it can't really be flanked due to all-around firepower. It can suffer from beam races but it can also end up near impervious to races with interceptable weapons (which is most races at that priority) with some decent rolling.

I find the Olympus and Artemis, and then later the Chronos, to do exactly what I need them to do. They are fragile ships, and races with too many beam weapons will eat them for lunch.
