Hey there, one of my players just emailed this post, I hope it doesn't get sappy, but anyway, here's the post:

Production Starts on Conan: Red Nails 2D/3D Animated Film

Sherman Oaks, California-based Swordplay Entertainment Inc., has begun principal production on the animated feature film, CONAN: RED
NAILS, based on the classic story by the best-selling fantasy author
Robert E. Howard, a new 2D/3D animated feature film, targeting a 2006
release on video/DVD. New Line Home Entertainment has acquired all
North American distribution rights to the animated feature film.

Cinema Management Group (CMG), an international sales company based
in West Hollywood, headed by sales veteran Edward Noeltner, will be
taking CONAN: RED NAILS to the Cannes Film Festival where it will be
looking to set-up international pre-sales on the feature.

CONAN has previously been adapted into feature films, and television,
but this is the first full-length animated feature film based on
Conan the Cimmerian, a character Howard created in 1932.

The feature film is being directed by animation veteran Victor Dal
Chele, (SPIDER-MAN, GHOSTBUSTERS, THE REAL ADVENTURES OF JOHNNY QUEST, BUTT-UGLY MARTIANS and ROBOCOP: ALPHA COMMANDO). Comics, animation and superheroes expert Steve Gold is onboard as the film's writer/producer while Larry Houston (THE X-MEN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, HBO'S SPAWN and DISNEY'S GARGOYLES) is animation director.

CONAN: RED NAILS, one of Howard's most famous stories, is both a
sprawling epic and an equally engaging love story. When Conan and the
female warrior Valeria are betrayed in battle, they flee across
harsh desert and trackless jungle only to confront the mystery and
horror of a fabulous lost city. Conan becomes embroiled in a feud
between the city's factions, and must triumph over dragons, demons
and a host of human and magical foes to end the war and win Valeria's
love.

"Steve Gold is an incredible cinematic storyteller, and renown Conan
expert," said producer Jonathan Bogner. "We're all thrilled at this
opportunity to bring his vision of Conan to life and work with some
of the best artists in the world."

Gold and Dal Chele have assembled an impressive team of award-winning visual artists and tapped legendary illustrator Michael Kaluta as the key concept designer for the film.

"Michael has been associated with CONAN and the works of Robert E.
Howard for more than 30 years. He brings an amazing scope and
pedigree to the film," said Dal Chele.

Mark Schultz (CADILLACS & DINOSAURS) who recently illustrated THE
COMING OF CONAN THE CIMMERIAN: VOLUME 1 for publishing house
Ballentine and Del Ray, will add additional concept designs, as will
leading fantasy painter and book cover artist, Donato Giancola. Greg
Horn, a longtime Conan fan, and a hot young artist for comics and
videogames will also be contributing artwork for the project.

"I couldn't be more pleased with the creative and business teams
we've assembled for this film. We all feel a tremendous respect and
responsibility to the Conan franchise and Conan's legions of fans
around the world," said Gold. "This is going to be an incredible
ride!" he added.

It's going to be an animated feature film, see these paragraphs in the first post:

Right! ok but still, are we talking walt disney colors, or like the Animatrix, or like the final fantasty movie?

Based on the credits listed, I say it's somewhere in between. These guys worked on stuff like X-Men, Batman comics series, so I'd say look for that kind of style.

I can't seem to find anything on this Steve Gold character.

There has been speculation for years about another live action Conan movie. John Milius was penning the script, and everyone from Milius to the Wachowski brothers were listed as directors at one time or other, but latest news says Milius is out and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) has agreed to direct the next movie, King Conan: Crown of Iron, which Warner Brothers is producing. I can't find word if Stan Lee is still up for producing. Check this recent site.

One of my group's gamers just sent this email, and while I couldn't find it listed on the web I thought I'd post it here anyways, it can always be corroborated or refuted later. :)

Ron Perlman (Hellboy) has signed on to voice Conan of Cimmeria for
Swordplay Entertainment's Conan: Red Nails, the first animated film
featuring the mythic barbarian, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Marg Helgenberger ("CSI") and James Marsden ("X-Men" films, Superman
Returns) also are joining the voice cast, which includes Clancy Brown,
Cree Summer and Mark Hamill ("Star Wars").

The film will be directed by Victor Dal Chele, with a screenplay by
Steve Gold and Timothy Dolan. Gold and Jonathan Bogner are producing.
Swordplay's David R. Schwarcz and Patricia Gillum are executive
producing along with Peter Sederowsky and Fredrik Malmberg of Paradox
Entertainment, owners of the Conan property. Nicholas Temple is the
film's co-executive producer.

I did see that he's currently filming a Dungeon Seige movie starring Jason Statham ("The Transporter") and is just signed to do "Hellboy 2"

Hope to get some official info about King Conan soon
Haven't seen any new info since the speculation that Robert Rodriguez was last signed to direct. Still no idea of who is supposed to play Conan, but I haven't seen any actual production news about this.

He emailed the website where he got the news, for some reason I didn't get the emails at work, so I typed the URL when I got home, & here it is, from Superhero Hype.com:

There are some images of what the main characters will look like posted;

Thanks for that link! The characters looks great! The only one I didn't like that much is Valeria. Anyway, they're pretty cool!

I just went to the movie site and here's the cast list a/o this writing:
Robert E. Howard's Conan: Red Nails movie site (NOTE: move mouse over actor's name below to link to IMDB site for info on the actor).
Well, there are some wierd changes from the story, but still it will be something I look forward to seeing. By the way, why does every artist refuse to draw a square-cut mane of tossled black hair as a square cut mane???

I'm not thrilled with the Disneyesque animation style; I would prefer something grittier, like the Conan comic currently published by Dark Horse.

On the other hand, Ron Perlman is an excellent choice. I'll give it a chance.
