Hiro, there have been other editions of Traveller that have gone into great lengths to 'modernize' and upgrade the rules. Great systems but a lot of micromanage details that don't always translate to gaming. Mostly fun for people who like to build stuff.

Yup

FF&S still rates as one of my favourites so as you no doubt have observed, I am a nerd who likes building stuff...

Mongoose went back to the basics and the simplicity of the Classic Traveller seems to be a big factor. I applaud Mongoose for keeping the simplicity while making efforts to clarify, update and add to the rules. That's sometime a balancing act. I don't (fully) blame Mongoose for errors because I've yet to see any game company not have errors especially when many other companies put all their resources into one or two particular lines. Mongoose has a lot of brands in the fire and I say they still do a good job given circumstance.

Despite my moaning, I like Mongoose. I like the chargen and task system. Both are pretty simple yet layer up nicely to get whatever level of complexity you prefer. In another current thread the old topic of is Traveller a setting or a system is raging and I lean to the side that says its a setting. I would like a clearer definition from Mongoose but I think with the rules being what they are its a major re write to separate them out. I haven't bought the latest Mercenary, I'll get round to it maybe, but it and v2 of High Guard are what I would hope are Mongoose creating a distance between the rules and the 3rd Imperium. I am a little sceptical that that's happening as it might alienate the hard core. From a business point of view I'd have thought creating a clear line between Traveller the rules and Traveller the 3rd Imperium setting would enable Mongoose to publish more settings but I don't know if that's there game plan or if their licence allows that.

Do know also I own a LOT of scifi games so I've seen what's out there. I can compare.

Which others do you regularly play?

I don't know of any game that does it "better", but that is a value judgment.

agreed, I'll house rule/hybridise/bastardise MgT till I like the way it is...

Now, I might shoot myself in the foot for finding players but hey...

I pay attention to a lot of games out in the field, probably for Trav, you are looking at CT for most popular, ease of finding players; SWN, has some issues, but being Level/Class/EXP based, it draws DnD crowd pretty well.

Ya see, that's what I don't like in any game - level based characters starting as complete nubes...

Not that I am crazy about 50 year old characters suddenly leaving a stable lifestyle to wander off in search of a mid life crisis...

Wait, am I talking about me or Traveller?

Yes. It was the equivalent of a Jeep (original). I had a '45 Willys jeep when I was a kid. No top whatsoever. Vacuum operated wipers, etc.

More like a Deuce and Half, but both it and the Jeep started out with no roofs....

A 2 1/2 is HUGE compared to a 2 bucket front and rear seat (like a jeep) Air/Raft.

Here's a 2 1/2 ton:

That is a 2 dTon vehicle, not an Air/raft..... Remember Air/Rafts can haul around 4 people and 4 tons of cargo (Mass Not displacement tons).

Nope. This is an air/raft. Same size as pictured from CT onward.

I don't know about that, but lots of people have big issues with spatial perception so I am not going to argue with y'all.

But if you want to see where I my opinion comes from got outside and mark yourself a rectangle that is 10 feet (3 meters) wide by 20 feet (6 meters) long. then park a jeep or similar small car in the middle of it and you will see my point.

From CT Book 3 (1977ed.); The standard air/raft weighs 4 tons and can carry a payload of up to 4 tons including pilot and passengers.

Which sounds much more like a 2 1/2 ton truck than a 1/4 ton truck (Jeeps, Small Pickups etc. etc...)

I think most people misconception of the Air/Raft is due to little experience with boats, which is the model seemingly used in early Traveller, which in turn comes from some of the fiction sources that use Air Boats and maritime models for their grav vehicles.

Consider this:

This is approximately the size of an Air/Raft. In the Boat mode....

Here it i from CT book 3. Nothing TO argue about. It's the same size (look at the doors) as the one I just posted....

But see in that picture there is no strong visual clue on the seating layout, its quite possible for a single bench seat right behind the windscreen. As such my assertions are still valid.

So? It doesn't mean that the picture I posted couldn't be an Air/Raft too.... It fits the explicit stated parameters.

Arguing over air/rafts ...

I actually think of it more as a Toyota crewcab hilux http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Hilux#mediaviewer/File:Toyota_Hilux_Crew_Cab_1982.jpg :P .
