Primer for the Third Imperium & Traveller

I'm completely new to Traveler but I've been thinking about starting up a campaign for it at the end of the year. However I'm looking for information on the Third Imperium setting. I'm not looking for hyper-detailed information on one planet or sector, but instead a good overall view of the campaign setting. Something that can help explain how the setting goes from Modern Day Earth to system spanning empires with alien races and humans mingling and living together. If this was a D&D Setting I'd be looking for the Campaign Guide book. Something to help give me an overview before I decide whether or not I want to start buying all of the different supplements that are out there.

Also out of interest: My FLGS has a whole bunch of random Traveller books. How backwards compatible is the Mongoose version of Traveller?

Closest to the original Traveller (usually referred to as Classic Traveller) by GDW.
