Introduction to the Star Fleet Universe: Prime Directive and Roleplaying

Ever wondered just what is the Star Fleet Universe? Want to find out?

This short introduction provides some of the background, "geography," timeline, mysteries, and a quick look at the species inhabiting the Star Fleet Universe. It can also be used as a brief introduction of what is "known" for new players at demos and conventions. Come game with us in the Star Fleet Universe!

Not as fast as I would have liked. In all honesty, personal and professional things happened to create a nearly perfect storm. Mom has needed my time a lot after Dad passed and I was quite worried about her. That took a minimum of a couple of weekends a month for a while, but that is starting to ease off. In addition, my doctor yesterday gave me a rather stern lecture about exercise being necessary if I want to keep working on books, so I need to find time to do what is necessary there.

However, I'm feeling the urge to put my hands on words again (in a metaphorical sort of way), so work should pick up on what Mike has already sent me. I'll need to distill that and absorb it and then really look at Hammer's Slammers to see how to integrate some ideas on organization from that self-contained setting.

Fast reply - thanks :D
Please remember to look after yourself, otherwise you'll never finish the book

Hammers Slammers is a great book and I thought worked really well for Traveller (of course I'd have liked more background but you can't have everything). An old copy of the Traveller B5 might be a help too (but not the Warships of B5 - there are serious "issues" in my opinion with that one).
Anyway I'm sure that we'll all look forward to hearing how you get on.

Remember. Get some rest. If you haven't got your health, then you haven't got anything.

Couldn't agree more. I'm looking forward to PDT, but I'd rather you have your health than I have a game.

Just thought I'd post my apprecitation that someone is doing this. You have another sale here for sure! :)

FWIW, I know my group will be just as interested in playing the naval game as they will be in playing a merchant trading game in the Star Fleet Universe, so hopefully both types of games will be in the book.

In the meantime, I'll be reading my Call to Arms Star Fleet book and waiting for the Fed fleet I just ordered from ADB and the Kzinti fleet I just ordered from Mongoose. Good times. :D

Quick question. Over on the ADB side of things, there is a debate going on about what size square should represent 1.5 meters. I'm not seeing a consensus of opinion. Is there a standard that everyone agrees on?

It depends :) If you're mapping out a big ship then the square size will probably be smaller than when mapping out a small ship.

SVC has been working on some deckplans for KRAG and for the D7, the deckplan is pretty big. He's written: My plans (at current, as big as will fit on 11x17) are 7mm per meter.

We're dealing with pretty big ships.

OK. For big ships I generally prefer having one deck per side of paper. I'm unlikely to need more detail than that.

There was a suggestion at one point of varying scales - that is, do a 'zoomed out' drawing and a larger scale copy of critical areas (bridge, main engineering, etc);

This came from Warships of Babylon 5, which - whilst full of very shiny things - has decks on the bigger ships which are completely unreadable due to the demands of fitting everything onto a page (the victory-class in S&P is the worst culprit); especially when the deck is full of repeating cargo areas or staterooms, we don't need that; a few generic corridors for firefights against marauding tribbles and the important rooms along with a (less detailed) general layout is better than a massive blob of unreadable ink...

Very excited about this. I used to have the original Prime Directive, but never ran it.

As to deckplans, if the game is all about Prime Teams like the original, then you just need to have the critical areas that a firefight would happen; bridge, engineering, various labs. You don't need every deck in meticulous detail.

Post from Steve Cole on the latest plan for PD: Traveller. I've interjected in [square brackets] for people who don't obsessively read the ADB forums.

The plan at the moment is this:

During May 20-28, Jean [travels to Amarillo for a working holiday and while there] converts PD20M core rulebook into PD Traveller core rulebook. That's about 200 pages.

About June 1st, SVC and Matthew decide if we want to go with a 200-page POD [Print-on-Demand, softcover] book two months later, and 200-page hardback three months later, or a 300-page hardback book four months later. The extra 100 pages would be 65 pages of deck plans, and 35 pages of RPG stuff like (perhaps) a survey of hex of the F&E map with several important planets laid out in multi-page detail and other planets done in one-page or one-paragraph, and/or maybe a campaign or something.

The extra 100 pages would then be turned into the first issue of FINAL FRONTIER [a magazine to support Prime Directive in all flavours] with 20-40 pages of game system specific information (covering PD, PD20M, and GURPS, and maybe Savage Worlds, and of course Traveller if we went with the 200 page version of PD traveller).

I will be on the bus from Friday night 9:15 Eastern Daylight Time until Sunday morning 8:15 Central Daylight Time. I'll have very limited computer time. I will try to check in here.
