Pre-career education impact on qualification

In the Preview there's an echo of the Pre-Career education options in Traveller with University and a hint at Military Academy, and there are certainly skills and benefits to be had, but there is a slight disconnect. Pioneer rules are that you automatically qualify for the first career a Pioneer selects. Does the DM+1 for qualification therefore apply to any qualification roll? That seems like a bad idea, because the boost to EDU that comes from the university pre-career is also giving a boost.

I suspect that's an artifact of the preview rules being a subset of the full book. The automatic qualification might be just for preview characters, because other things in the main rules had to be omitted.

However the University text does just say "...to qualify for any career other than Rich." It doesn't say that's limited to their first career, and the preview does allow career changes. So yes, you might graduate University with honours, automatically entering Technician, then after a couple of terms getting a +2 to qualify for Engineer.

That passes the pub test for me.

Ah, so a pre-career gives you a permanent bonus to almost all qualification rolls, either changing assignment or picking a new career. Quite a boon!

Hmmm... aside from the Military Academy "automatic qualification, as long as it is the first career attempted after graduation", I actually couldn't find any "next term" or "first attempt" rule for any pre-career qualification bonuses. I think this may be an overlooked CRB rule - your degree is good for any attempt to join a suitable career, at any time.

That's my point. It says "...grants DM+1 (DM+2 if graduation was with honors) to qualify for any career other than Rich..." but also says "A Qualification check is not required for your first career."

We will have to wait a bit (or get a response from Matt) to know if the first term automatic qualification is a preview rules rule, a core Pioneer one, or something else, like a rule that only applies to Crew careers.
