New pre-career events

Whitehart

Banded Mongoose
I had some ideas, so I’m making new event tables for the companion pre-career options. Except Merchant Academy, because that could more easily use the one for university. And psi-academy because I need to familiarize myself better with psionics for that. Please let me know what you think.

Edit: Expanded events tables for all pre-career options.

That is one of the issues in the Traveller life path is that sometimes there's too much duplication of events. I would love to see D66 charts, but these are pretty cool. Consider this great feedback.

I’m already working on an expansion, plus separation of University, Military Academy, and Merchant Academy. Work, tired brain, work 😝

I expanded the tables to D66 tables and added the pre-career options I skipped before; and split the university, military academy, and merchant academy events.

Please, please, please give feedback! 🙏

I'd keep the double 1 roll and double 6 roll the same. Life events should perhaps be more than 1 entry as it contains several entries.

And take out the cr*p word.

But some nice events here.

Some of the events say things you;re in hiver territory or on a water world. These may contradict what the player has in mind for where they are training. They might have already selected their home world.

I based these off of some existing fan-made lists. I also tried to include some life events among them, just not rolled randomly. Ultimately, the life events table is just “Roll 2D to see what generic thing happens.”

However, that said, I will make 66 a Life event. 11 is a “do not graduate” and I have multiple ones of those on each table.

Done. Replaced with “undesirable.”

Except in one very specific case I recall, these do not affect anyone’s homeworld before the age of 18. When I specify, it’s the location of the institution that you must attend. For example, if you want to attend the US Military Academy at West Point, you must go to West Point, NY even if you grew up in rural Iowa.

If the event does interfere with your character’s story, simply ask your referee to roll again.

Double 1 is psionic institute Double 6 is increase your SOC by 1.

I must admit I found a lot of the life events a bit meh.

It was the psionic institute in Hiver territory that I thought was a bit off, If you;re planning a campaign nowhere near the Hiver worlds then you'd have to decide why you travel to where you end up. Things should be generic. So I would change 'Your academy’s branch is located on a planet with a hostile atmosphere,' to 'You spend a semester on a different world ....', but hey it's your project and feel free to ignore anything I say,

There were a couple of others, such as being in a belt or a water world, can't remember the specifics.

However, there are really good, a lot of works gone into this. By the way it's standard Mongoose practice not to have commas in currency amounts.

I've never been a fan of granting Skill 1 rather than just a skill level with the exception of a Rank bonus (or similar situation) where it is used to stress a baseline competency for a particular role. (In narrative I consider those skills to have been a requirement for the promotion, not a result of it. Like Troi needing a certain level of leadership to pass the commander's exam in TNG)

Especially for university where a player may have chosen a particular skill at rank 1 upon entrance. If I chose Electronics (Comms) as my field of study but then rolled 54 and didn't get anything... I'd feel bad for losing out on an event because I chose wrong.

I’ll fix the comma thing :3

I added some specific places in pre-careers because characters will then have years and years in careers after to relocate. And it might help fuel imagination.

As I said before, if it really doesn’t work, your Referee should let you reroll.

I can fix this to “gain a level in.” Unfortunately, there are plenty of skills I miss due to events and promotions because I already have it at one.

This is why we call it Character Discovery in our game rather than Creation.

You always wanted to join the Navy, made it through the Academy, and during your first term EVENT and bam you are now into the Truther career gathering your followers to bring the news of....

Furthermore, these are for pre-career options. Very few players will have much at level one already. I made sure that every table (except maybe university) didn’t overlap the level 1 skills. For university, it’s a very small chance it will overlap, in which case maybe pick another skill that makes sense.

I'll be honest, I almost always treat the grant level 1 skill options as grant +1 skill level. But there are some times where that probably shouldn't apply
