Pictures of new Conan

While browsing web I stumbled upon pics of new Conan, starring Jason Momoa. You can see them on my blog, Scroll of Skelos, along with few words of my commentary (as usual in polish, but google translate can help you :) ).

Yeah, we want Blue Volcanic eyes   :)

From what I've read, the filmmakers' plan is to change Momoa's eye color digitally in postproduction to make them just that.

I wish they just changed digitally Momoa himself. He's a male model for chrissake. I'd rather see someone more masculine in this role.

Well something are good, but not want them regimenting it, if u play it then u know, my poor (Male) Barbarian is running around in a yellow mini-skirt and looks like a whore, I kinda get really annoyed about that, also hate how AoC has changed concept of The Hyborian world to suit a Computor Game, I want those that create anything Conan to focus on the brutality and imagery done in Conan the Barbarian Film, it was superb, Conan Destroyer was terrible :(

You weren't the one on AoC global chat a week or two back griping about the "skirts" were you?

That's the "look" of the Hyborian Age. And, it was the "look" way before AoC ever came into existence.

Many of the comics from the 70's gave the Hyborian Age its feel.

This, from Savage Sword of Conan. Nobody here wearing trousers.

And, this is from Marvel's The Chronicles of Conan, started back in the 70's also:

He wears a fauld.

The newer Dark Horse stuff shows the same thing:

If you're looking to have your character wear pants, the Hyborian Age is the wrong age in which to wear them. They, exist, sure. But, you see a lot of "skirts" (as you call 'em), and robes and loincloths as well as trousers and leggings.

The Hyborians have this "Roman/Greek" feel to them, and their dress reflects that.

I think he will make a good Conan, I hope gears like 'Conan the Barbarian,' Film, not AoC gear.

Here's some shots from AoC. Again, I think that one of the things Funcom did "right" was hit the nail on the head when it came to the "look" of the Hyborian Age.

Look at those Picts!

That's not the "look" of the Hyborean Age, that's the look of the "Hyborean Age" as imagined by Marvel comics....
Do not get me wrong: I like that half-naked Frazetta-style Hyborian Age fashion.
However, I'm not so sure that's what kind of style R E Howard imagined in his original stories.
As far as I rememeber Conan wears just a loincloth when he is in specific situations (e.g. nailed to a cross at the beginning of "A Witch shall be born" or prisoner at the beginning of "The Scarlet Citadel").
I would like to hear the opinion of some Howardian authority about it (Vincent, are you around?).
In any case, given our exposition to half-a-century of half-naked Conans it is impossible to refuse the idea: we all like it!
Regarding pants I have nothing against it, as long as the rest is quite Barbaric.
Take John Milius' "Conan the Barbarian", whoever decided the fashions (Milius or some costumist) was a genius to me!
Milius' Conan with his pants is much more evocative and barbarian than the half-naked Conan in "Conan the Destroyer".
I remember an interview to Milius (special content in my favourite DVD!) saying that they explicitely took and mixed fashion elements from many real historical contexts (Mongols, Vikings, etc..) to give feeling of "reality" without being in an exact historical situation.
And that's to me is perfect for the Hyborean Age!!

The Hyborians have this "Roman/Greek" feel to them, and their dress reflects that

Howards Hyborians are straightforwardly medieval. Mind you, they weren't wedded to trousers either.

Conan cheerfully adopted the clothing of whatever culture he found himself in: if they are going for Cimmerian dress he should probably be in a loincloth or a plaid.

I'm actually encouraged. I had a thumbs down opinion before, but, slowly, that thumb is being raised to the other direction.

The dude looks a lot better as Conan than I thought he would.

At first I was pessimistic, but after seeing those pictures, I think I saw a candlelight in darkness. Some of my comments, very short and brief, are http://scrollofskelos.blogspot.com/2010/05/kolejne-zdjecia-z-nowego-conana.html (as usual, in polish)

BTW, I liked Solomon Kane, I think it is best howardian movie ever produced (yes, I didn't like Conan the Barbarian)

PALaDYn,
HOW/ WHEN/ WHERE were you able to watch Solomon Kane?
As a US fan, I have never seen it here, I have it in my queue in NETFLIX, but it is currently unavailable!!!!
Oh woe is me.

Friend of mine got it and gave me as a gift. Normally, I don't watch "pirate copies" but this time I was defenseless. Some time ago I went to the light side of the Force :). But don't worry, from what I read on REH forums, it 's gonna be released on DVD this June (perhaps it was mentioned June 11th, anniversary of REH's death). I'm going to buy it, even if I had to pay for shipment from US or even Mars!

It's not going to show in theaters first? :?:

Oh woe is me.

It did get a brief, minimal release in Britain; e.g. in the whole of the Newcastle area for one week on one screen at one time!

Still I got to see it with my boys - generally good fun with no opportunity missed to throw in a S&S trope. Maybe not great cinema but a good S&S adventure movie nevertheless. I'm eagerly awaiting the DVD release.

I am concerned that it still hasn't been released in the states - doesn't bode well at all for the prospect of the other two movies that were supposed to make up a trilogy being funded.

Solomon Kane doesn't have a US distributor (that I'm aware of). I was all set to catch a screening of it at the Newport Beach Film Festival last month only to learn that the print was stuck overseas 'cos of the ash cloud from Iceland.

The June 28 (or so I heard) home-video release date is for the UK and Europe(?), there is no scheduled release date, in cinemas or on video, here in the US.

Jason Momoa? Wasn't he in Stargate Atlantis? And isn't he BLACK?

Yes, he was and I think he's Hawaiian or something (though I could be wrong). :?
