Well, since we are developing weapons along this line (shooting man made lightning) it shows the possibilities. And, it showcases a weapon that could be used in Trav.

That one's got a lot of refinement needed before it's properly weaponized - I mean, yeah, there was an impressive amount of blow-through, but the vehicle? Considerable cosmetic damage, airbags deployed, electronics disabled (I've seen nothing to say whether that disablement was permanent or temporary), and no damage to the two occupants (beyond one heckuva scare)? That's not a great deal of on-target effect for a half-gigajoule "weapon"...

All the electronics were melted. It is a weapon being designed to take out the target as in, it no longer functions. Not to kill people. At that power level the range is about 30 miles and travels at over 200,000 km/s. So yes, a powerful weapon.
