Online Aids

Hi guys,

I'm looking for two aids as I'm running an online CG with MGT products.

Character Sheet in word or pdf form (that can be typed into).

And a ship generator that produces a 2D diagram of the ship. (Top down view). Is this available?

:P

I'm currently using CutePDF evaluation version to type into 'read-only' PDFs. It's a really simple and effective piece of software and I'm probably going to buy it. The only thing it does is add a watermark footnote, rather than watermarks from other software that appears in the middle of the sheet.

So, if you can't find an editable PDF that meets your requirements I'd seriously give this a chance - I personally use it with the character sheet called Travchargensheet which you can find online. It's mainly for character generation rather than actual gameplay. However, because it gives you a lot of room for chargen you get a good sense of character background, which is great for the convention games/club games I run.

you have to enable them when you load up the worksheet, likely they will be off by default, it also assumes youare using office 2007 or later , if you aren't let me know and i will convert it it to an XLS

Oops, I completely misunderstood this thread's title and was shocked by
the idea of Aids transmitted online ...

I've got some using Windows machines XLS 2007 or later.

I'm on an iMAC using 2008 I think.

So far my favorite PDF viewer and annotator (with stamp, graphic features as well) is PDF-XChange

It even comes in a slim 6 MB portable version. (I haven't used the print driver option since I write raw postscript* and use Distiller from Adobe Acrobat ($$$ version) to gen PDFs.)

For deckplans, if you are looking for free non-CAD 2D solutions, I'd recommend:
  • Inkscape - 2D+ vector and raster illustration program. Comparable in some areas to Adobe Illustrator (PDF/EPS support is still a bit rocky, but has recently made great leaps). I find its curve editing (and new Spiro curves) mostly superior to Illustrator and easier to use.

Paint.Net - 2D paint program with layer handling (like deck labels) and other PhotoShop like features. In a recent PbP game the Referee [*Hi Ref*] provided two deckplans - one with labels and a legend, the other with cargo loaded - I was able to merge the two together very easily with Paint.Net.

IrfanView - awesome image file manipulation app - such as clipping, resizing and optimally scaling (its best scaling method is superior to PhotoShop) and file converting for best use online and in PDFs. This program has a ton of features and will execute plugins from commercial progams as well as one created by the community at large.
Cheers.

* Direct postscript is great and free using ghostscript. Postscript is a programming language - PDF is the processed postscript for display and direct to high end printers. It is great because code provides absolute precision and complete flexibility - in many cases a few lines of code can do what takes a professional hours - and then can change everything completely in a matter of minutes. But that requires progamming skill and ability to abstractly visualize graphical results.

Hey guys, having trouble finding suitable software to do ship deck plans using an iMAC and then creating PDFs. Any thoughts?

I use AutoRealm to do my deckplans now.

Learning curve is not as great as AutoCad.

Don't know how it compares to others. I hear that the Google drawing software is good and easy.

You have to Unhide the data tabs, which are hidden to prevent accidental changes, at that point you can edit the sector data etc.... right click on one of the tabs and select unhide Sector Data, World Profile, and Sector Layout, to un-write protect each sheet you need to enter the password TAS123... to change the pictures you will have to edit the macro ... this may not be a task for a beginner ... your miliage may vary... (take a copy first)

I already made backups, so thanks for the info.

I appreciate the help. Office to me is always simple stuff, word processing and actuarial tables.
