The mini-beam hits 50% of the time. The full beam gets, on average, as many hits as it has dice (yes, I know beams do silly thingsGreg Smith said:Triggy said:Also, if I were a White Star, I'd rather have an accurate, mini-beam than a triple/quad damage, precise, beam hit me!!
Don't forget the minibeam retains precise.
The point is the minibeam will now hit where the beam couldn't. The beam does do significantly more damage on average, I agree, but the minibeam cannot be outmaneuvered like the beam can.
Triggy said:All good points and all worth playtesting. My point was simply, if arc is not an issue and you don't simply have to do one point of damage/crew to kill a ship then you will still always choose beam mode. If it gives high PL ships an extra option vs a swarm of lower PL ships then I'm also not exactly crying over it!
At the end of the day it is meant as an anti-fighter option and I still wouldn't mind seeing the minibeam version losing precise.

Unless you are going to make it nastier, just leave my White Star alone!
I could try sculpting on some fangs so it has a toothy grin just like the Whitestar Gunship?![]()

Triggy said:Hindsight - I agree that some of the other suggestions are too big in terms of concept (rather than balance per se) but I will point out that the White Star is probably the most powerful Raid PL ship out there and therefore the nudge needs to be of a reasonable size (personally a 10" range beam would be enough for me, and I may think an 8" beam and 12" pulsars would be better but it's a bigger changes rules-wise).

SM? Are you insane? It's already got enough manoeuverablity IMHO and it certainly doesn't need anymore. With a 12" beam and SM, it won't have received a nerf - it'll be better!
I really like the idea that the beam drops to 10" or shorter range, because a 12" beam really doesn't change the situation for most opponents. The WS should be getting in close since that is what it is seen doing in the show time and time again.
