Newbie Question - Parrying

This seems obvious, but I'm not 100% sure. If an attack and the responsive parry are both successful, does that mean the attack damage is applied to the parrying weapon or shield? And if so, how quickly do shields, etc. get destroyed in average play?

If both attack and parry are Normal Successes, then the attack does no damage UNLESS the attacking weapon is bigger than the parrying weapon as per the instructions on page 86, Successful Roll section. The damage is applied to the person, not the weapon.

If defender or the attacker gets a critical success then resolve damage as above and either the defender or the attacker will also get a Combat Maneuver.

OK, in that case my next question is: Why is AP/HP listed for all the weapons? How does that come into play?

If you look under the Combat Maneuvers on page 88, you will see a Damage Weapon combat maneuver. Also, on the Close Combat Fumble table range 10-12.

Keep in mind that sometimes damage weapon is THE way to go- especially if the attacking weapon is smaller than the parrying weapon. Sure there are other CMs that work (trip, blind, disarm, etc), but damage weapon has a certain finality to it- with disarm the victim of the cm can pick up the weapon again, tripped opponents get up, blind opponents eventually can see- but a broken weapon is done. Especially 2h weapons. In my groups games, one handed weapon weilders have used the damage weapon CM to overcome much better equiped opponents (at least weapon damage wise). A Greathammer weilding Troll can be reduced to unarmed attacks after two damage weapons attempts by a 1h wep weilding human, one a critical 1h attack vrs successful parry (that does not let any damage through anyway), and one succesful attack vrs unsuccesful parry! Ta-Da! The Troll is evading, or parrying his arms to ribbons, until he can connectwith a right cross that knocks your head off of your shoulders. Still, I'll take my chances against an unarmed Troll over one with a greathammer anyday...

Top Tip - Bear this in mind when fighting Scorpion Men. Great way to neutralise those pesky tail stingers.

It's interesting to note that in 'Monster Colosseum on page 90, it says that "In the Second Age of Glorantha, the quelling of Chaos has almost eliminated the race of scorpion men but there is still one great queen remaining and in time these creatures of Chaos may replenish their ranks.".

So the chance of actually meeting a scorpion man is pretty small (unless one travels to the Tunnelled hills... I'm assuming that's where the queen is).

Another good tactic is a strong Glue spell.
