New to babylon 5 - was thinking of getting shadows

I was thinking of getting the fleet box. Is this a good first choice as I've only choose these becuase of the way they look.

Any tips/Pointers I need to know as a newb?

i've also just seen that a new rulebooks coming out in August so I'll probably wait till then but any advice you can give me?

Shadows are about to go a bit of an overhaul, with a couple of ship changes (loose hunter, gain another type of shadow ship) and I think the damage system changes.
However they are definately different to use, and "can" require a good tactician to get full benefit from them. The boxed set is currently extremely top heavy, with too many armageddon ships in it.

don't be put off by shadows, they are fun if nothing else, they just either beat the hell out of someone, or get murdered! no middle ground. The best beginer fleet is probably Minbari or Centauri as they are both tough, but Centauri are getting a complete overhaul in second ed! Narn and EA as well as being pretty cool looking are good fleets, the third age EA "probably" the most balanced of the EA fleets. Brakiri could be good with their wealth of new ships as well.

the best fleet for a beginner may change after 2e so its hard to say. i started with EA but its not until recently that i've started to use interceptors. for ages i couldnt work it out and then one day it just clicked.

The Shadows look so cool and the ships (both of them) are very nice :D (I don't count the hunter - its not a proper Shadow). Try and play on tables with terrain and hit and run............. :D

They suffer a bit from lack of variety however................

yeh thats why i like them so much painting them would be a doddle. And i don't really mind about the lack of variety
The lack of variety is only in the models though. With 2nd ed. (6 weeks away), they'll have a good selection of ships to choose from, making them much more playable (even if two are only variants of others).

easy to paint as well ;-)

Unless you want to show that shadow skin :D If you aren't happy with just black it can get trickier...

I'm still figuring out how to do that before starting my own shadow fleet. I would like to recreate that shimmering shadow skin for my shadow fleet.

I was in the same position and I ended up with Shadows. Number one reason was and still is the look for me. In terms of game play I would actually think they are the easiest to play for a number of reasons:

1) The big difference is there's a lot less record keeping- no criticals, or crew to keep track of, just damage
2) You really don't have to be anal about movement as they can go all over the place- you're not as restricted as the rest of the fleets
3) This will change in 2ed, but the damage table is pretty straight forward and makes record keeping even less of a hassle
4) They have a limited list of Special Actions so you don't have to remember or worry about them
5) They also have a limited number of weapons on their ships so there's no huge downtime on deciding which weapon systems are aiming at which ships
6) Yeah, and you can't forget the limited ship list... very top heavy as someone pointed out... so not much thinking here either

All in all, the shadows are the most straightforward fleet in the game...IMHO

But at the same time you are missing out on a lot of the core mechanics(namely criticals) which makes this game quite fun.

Err that one is not quite true - you miss out on TAKING criticals as the other races do, you can INFLICT them on your opponents quite happily with precise beams of death...I assure you, the fun part with criticals is in the giving not receiving ;)

Would agree entirely with the rest of your assessment, quickest and easiest to play with, least record keeping, and the least complications to be familiar with.

Thing you'll find with Shadows is that most of your games will be over quickly (as compared to other fleets), as you have less ships to move and less messy measurement to move them. Still, wouldn't say that using Shadows is a no-brainer, to actually play competitively ypu need to fight very selectively, exploiting SM to the full by moving into the most vulnerable arcs and choosing your moment when to attack...in ACTA Shadows are really quite frail and are in no way a "stand and fight" type fleet!

Ok thanks for all you help. I think I will probably still go for shadows as everything you have is said is my sort of gaming style. I will probably wait till second edition though before I buy the rulebook.

Hey - if one fleet caught your eye, go with it.

If you like the look and character of a fleet, you'll generally play better as a result

The shadow box isn't as bad as it sounds, simply because there's no problem with using the shadow ships as war-level hunters if you prefer (many people avoid the hunter model as the coat-rack-o-doom looks....well.....a bit poo); as long as your opponent knows what ship model x represents and you're consistent about it, it doesn't really matter.

Painting wise, a black undercoat is perfectly presentable but doing shadow skin properly (fiddly as it is) really does make them look a ton better than just straight black. It's not quite so daunting as it sounds, as there is a little texturing on the hulls already.
Glossy varnish on top is also the way forwards.

They're great fun to play, and whilst they can be fragile compared to ships of a similar points level, don't mistake this for being easy to beat - and for that matter they can be annoyingly hard to kill anyway with a bit of luck - I've seen a pair of Var'Nic long range destroyers thunder in at it, firing everything they had. It took the shots, laughed off most of the fire and regenerated much of the remaining damage - before blowing the destroyers away in one slicer beam shot each. Total remaining damage on the shadow ship at this point? Less than 1/3 of the total.

Don't just try rushing at an enemy capitalship line; you will get shot to bits. But once you learn to use their supermanouvrability - they're like vree, but faster and better armed! - people will really get scared. Your insanely good fleet initiative PLUS a decent scout means that controlling the pace of battle isn't that hard.

Shadows are basically the ultimate hit-and-fade fleet, doubly so in campaigns where they don't have to pay to refit damage and have no crew expenses (other than brand new warships your only regular expense is replacement shadow spitfire wings); they can pick an enemy fleet apart over several games at no cost to themselves despite nominally 'losing' the games - then go on the offensive when there's no longer anything left capable of stopping a shadow ship in a one-on-one duel.

Oh - and the option of the shadow Planet Killer (the cloud). Has to be used once in a while. Just for sheer awesomness.

"What are you firing at?"
"Umm....that Escort Destroyer. And that one. And.....that one. Oh - and that one. And those two carriers at the back."
Slap!
Slap!
Slap!
Slap!
Slap!
Ka-blam!

"....I see. Would you like a nice game of chess?"

Yeh I don't thin they look that hard to paint, just black with highlights of a greyish blue.

Ok I've heard about there supoer manouvrability but someone said that might change in 2ed.
