Nelson-Class = Battle?!?

I noticed on OoB that the Nelson-Class Battleships have been lowered a class from War to Battle. Is this a typo, or is it real?

There is no way the Sharnhorst-Class Battlecruiser (Battle) is even close to the equal of the Nelson. The Bismark (War) is a much closer match. The Lion-Class Battleship (War) is almost the identical ship to the Nelson in practical game play. I would even go so far as to say in practical game play the Nelson is superior to the King George v-class Battleship (War).

I am only looking at the Royal Navy and the Kriegsmarine ships because they are historical enemies. I also noticed that in the "Un-official" 28 page errata the Nelson is NOT re-classed as Battle, however I am unsure if this errata would have replaced or stacked with the OoB errata.

But its wierd looking. That subtracts a priority level right there. . .

Thats exactly the kind of well thought out informative reply I was hoping for!

Weird looking? I prefer the term Distinctive.

If memory serves me correctly, the decision was made to move the Nelso class from War to Battle. After that decision was made, more research revealed that the armor score should be increased to 6+, and the Radar trait added. We didn't go back and re-evaluate the PL after these changes were made. IMHO, after much further play testing, the Nelson class should be moved back to PL War. Run the Nelson against the Littorio and you will see why I feel that way. My local group has made the decision to treat the Nelson as PL War.

I wouldn't say so. I used a Nelson last night to slowly beat to death a Ciao Duilio; they are powerful but not super powerful. They only gripe I have is the speed 5" is too fast for what the Nelson were really capable of. We cut it down to 4".

Technically a speed of 5" is spot on given the banding that Matt issued for ship stating purposes. Its one of those things - the break points have to be somewhere and the Nelsons work out at the botto of the band.

Looking at some of the ships in the orginal book I gave it a rough scale of 5kts = 1". The Nelsons were good for 23kts when built but during the Bismarck chase Rodney was struggling to hold 21, so that's where I get 4" from.

Thats a fine philosphy - as long as it is applied equally. I've seen many good naval rule sets adversely affected because someone has decided to apply a "reality factor" to the ships of one fleet whilst co-authors haven't done so for others and the inconsistenc hasn't been noticed until too late.
