Need help with workbench

Hello Gents,
I have a couple of weeks off from work this April and I'm planning on building The Ultimate Workbench of My Dreams.
I would appreciate any ideas and tips that worked for you when putting together your own workbenches. Photos would be most helpful. I'm planning on a 'L' shape in the corner of the room where my computer resides. The comp' would be on the small side of the 'L' with the remainder devoted to modeling and painting.

Photo bucket is doing odd things, so you don't get to see my table in all its messiness. The best advice I can think of is make sure you have a comfy chair, and a good light source. One of those adjustable desk lamps is what I use.

Make sure it is laid out to where things are easy to reach....

I actually have a full shop to work in but have moved everything inside after a flood and real crappy weather. In the shop I have a full L shaped work bench and once repairs are done this summer will be moving back outside.

Here is a look at where I work now and you will see what I mean by everything with in reach. One of the best things I did was build a rack to hold a few of the paints I use the most.

Going down from 27 Square feet of work area to less than 8 does make it a little more crowded though

It's not this bad all the time, it gets tidied with each new project. My paints live in draws (off to the right) when not in use, but the brushes live in the matchstick Blacko Tower.

I think you have more paint bottles on show there than I have bought in 20+ years of gaming :lol:

All I can say is get as much desk top as you can. The more workspace the better.

The construction was very simple. Just shelving brackest on the wall. None of the shelves are fixed down so it can be re-organised at will.

I'm making a mod for one. Doing Starcontrol first, covering the war between the Ur-Quan Hierarchy/Alliance of Free stars. Then I will do Starcontrol 2 latter. But the first one shouldn't be too far away. I have all the background drafted, and the ships coverted to ACTA format, I just want to get a bit more play testing in. I've included as much background about the universe, and the various races as I could find. For those people who never owned the games.

The ships are a lot more forward orientated weapons wise that B5 ships, so the game has a bit more of a dogfight feel. I had to cobble together rules to represent the ships special abilities, for some that was easy, but for certian races it was a bit trickier.(looking at you Androsynth). But I think I've got them sorted. But as I said, I just want to get a couple more test games in to make sure I don't unleash any ships that are broken.

Don't worry, soon you will be able to lead the Spathi in heroic retreat.

They are FW Inks I use them a lot in my painting. Make great glazes....

Made it on a whim one night after seeing something online by an Aussie company. This is a temp one until I can build a better one.

Basically scrap wood cut into 3.5 inch stips with 1 or 1.5 inch hole if I remember right leaning towards the 1", just cut a regular spacing along the boards then a stair step side panel.

Some impressive setups there.......

Here's mine, paints are kept in an old shoebox I get out what I need for new projects. Sorry the blacked out areas are commission pieces for several manufacturers I'm working on at the moment.

So yes my painting setup is a 1' square table and the edge of my computer desk LOL.
And on it I produce things like this (you can spot her in the top right of the desk picture):

Would you suggest Vallejo Model colour then? I'm quite stuck for money, have been very tempted by the Foundry paints lately because of the nature of how I paint (I'm quite Steve Dean/Dallimore). Do you think it would change my style of painting? What kinda things are worth trying?

Ahhh the Vallejo paints aren't really that representative of what I use, just what was out at the time, and they're Model Colour not Game Colour .
I'd say the split I use would be about 60% GW, 40% Vallejo. and then I tend to freely mix the two brands anyway. All the one's on my pallet were for some steel NMM I was painting as an experiment, Vallejo have some really nice Grey's in the range.
For me paint is paint, as with many things it's not what you use it's how you use it .
All ranges have their plus and minus points, but if I HAD to choose one range myself it would be GW's as for me they respond better to some glazing methods I use at times, saying that I prefer the more extensive colours in the VMC range.
Never heard a bad word said about the Foundry paints though, a mate had some and he thought they were great. Pre mixed highlights etc are a boon for the less confident or those painting large armies but it does only take a second to mix one yourself if you are working with smaller numbers of models.
As for the paint itself changing the way you paint, I'd doubt it. As I say it not what you use it's how you use it .

And they're cigars bought as a mistake in Belgium LOL, at 2 Euro's expensive they is not LOL
