Ok for all the people that have played in tournaments, what kind of games do you prefer to play. Do you like to roll for a random game? Play a straight up fight? Or do you like to see one of a kind games created by the tournament runners? If so whats the best (to you) and why.

Its kind of hard to explain, but I think CTA suits most players. Maybe with a little bit of scenery, to help break up the battle. There battles where JP, and flank attacks can be annoying, especially when opponents JP in.

I would be open to different formats but tournaments I've played in or run use the scenarios which came with the now outdated Tournament Pack; Annihilation, Call to Arms and Space Superiority. They'e straightforward both in terms of objective and scoring, and people are familiar with them so set up, scoring and games run smooth.

Something like Blockade Run or Convoy Duty are muttled with restrictions, can be lopsided and could complicate scoring. The last thing an organizer wants is scenario and scoring confusion.

Scenarios created by tournament organizers could be fun, but consider balance, time to learn it, set up & play time. Chernobyl has a great resource over at:

http://www.epicarmycard.com/Events.htm for running a tournament. He even has a custom made scenario (King of the Jumpate). Hope that helps.

I think prelude and I are of one mind about tourneys. you should be able to keep the battles as even as possible - which some scenarios are not. if you haven't tried winning a planetary assault in under 10 turns, give it a shot. have fun!
I find that some fleets are inherently better at certain PLs than others, that's why I decided to introduce the variable PL aspect in the tourneys I run. Also, I don't like fighting on open battlefields - it give too much advantage to beam heavy fleets, and so I took out one of the "standard tourney" scenarios and have added one of my own. This year I've done one more by letting ships earn XP. In short, I like to change things up from what people might expect in a "normal" tournament.

We play straight up games, rolling d6 for scenery. A 6 gives some scenery in that quarter. Almost always 5pt raid

As mentioned above, the basic scenarios such as Call to Arms, Space Superiority, Annihilation, Assassination (both having targets), etc. are good for tournanents, all of them having a small amount of terrain too :)

Scenarios are fun but for tourney play as noted they need to be balanced scenarios where both sides have the same goal, the scenarios where one sisde is the attacker and one side is the defender are fun but tend to be somewhat one sided for tournament play and also as noted a real bugger to score fairly.

Agreed. specialised or historical scenarios only work if you're not concerned with an entirely balanced fight - I mean let's face it, if an ambush scenario was an 'entirely balanced fight', it was a pretty cruddy ambush...

This kind of limits their usability in tournaments.

They are fun, though. There's something entertaining about 'take some of them with us, boys!' missions....
