NASA Wants Help In Naming A Space Station Node

Name A Space Station Node Contest

Click on the link and vote. Now also note that there is a blank section where you can suggest your own name for the node not on the list.

I suggest we vote Traveller as the write-in candidate name.

Unfortunately...one of the choices being "serenity", that should suck up the SF vote quite effectively. :(

I'm still gonna vote for traveller.

since serenity currently has 85% of the votes i dont think theres much point anymore :(

Was there any point in the first place? I mean, it's a space station module, not an advert for a roleplaying game (and seriously, I voted for Serenity too).

I voted Serenity, too. Seems most appropriate for the ISS's new "outhouse." If I thought "The Loo" stood a chance I'd vote for that.
:D

Babylon would be a good choice.
Not sure about that ... it's Node 3 they're naming. Would you really want the correlation to Babylon 3? Now, if Node 5 is still unnamed .....
I think .... "Contemplation"

TARDIS.

No, I voted for Serenity, too. But if it keeps people voting for Xenu or Christ, or something deeply inappropriate, I am all for going for the Firefly vote.

What, you'd no idea about the Browncoat influence on the name?

I suggested "Throne" myself.

If you look at the primary functions of the node it is kinda appropriate.

First the new cupola which give an expanded visual field for controlling Dexter.

Second, a lot of the "Life Support" machinery is going to be shifted to the new Node including waste processing. As well as a new and improved sanitation station.

I'm all for the Firefly connection myself -

but I think it should be a little more subtle - how about 'Flying Gosa'

I'm just say'n ... I've got words...

Is there actually any evidence that the choice of "Serenity" has anything to do with Firefly at all? Serenity is after all a perfectly usable word in its own right, maybe they were just looking for a word that meant "peaceful" rather than making a deliberate homage to a TV show.

I just voted and found the results so far to be very interesting.

Of the four listed options:
Earthrise - 5%
Legacy - 5%
Serenity - 86 %
Venture - 4%

The top 10 suggestions:
Xenu
Buddy
Synergy
Tranquility
Vision
Vista (now THAT is probably from the staff at Microsoft)
Horizon
Hope
Peace
Enterprise (the OTHER Sci-Fi white meat).

Serenity may have been initially listed/chosen for other reasons, but I have no doubt in my mind that the link to Firefly is what's driving it's popularity at the moment.

Given the way NASA marketing works, I'm guessing it is absolutely intentional, AND will never be admitted to.

Wow, I guess people will come up with conspiracy theories for anything that NASA does...

Me, I'd prefer to take it as read. I'm sure people are reading it as being something to do with Firefly, but I'm not going to say "hey, NASA clearly put that name in there as a deliberate reference to Firefly!" until there's actually evidence for that being the case. And tbh the other choices on the list don't really lend a lot of credence to the idea that they suggested the name because of Firefly - it just looks like it was proposed as its original meaning.
