Naming Ideas - Dilgar and Vree

My plan was to name my Dilgar ships after Waffen-SS Unit commanders, particularly from some of the more notorious units (Totenkopf, Floran Geyer, etc.) but with a Dilgar feel to them by reducing them to two syllables and separating the syllables with an apostrophe.

War criminal ships deserve war criminal names. Yes, I am well aware of the heinous nature of the SS. No I do not support the policies and philosophies of the SS in particular or fascists in general.

Grisly. And, honestly, if you play against another player who might be of the Jewish faith, somewhat inappropriate.

There are more than enough mass murders in world history to go around, if you like, and not just discuss WWII -- Pol Pot; Milosovic, Mladic, and Karadzic; Stalin; Mao; Matsui, Isogai, Tani (Nanking); Cortez (Mexico City); Pizarro (Peru); Hussein.

You can even get a little controversial with the naming here, if you wish: with some effort and the right inclusions, such as al-Bashir (Darfur); Innocent III (Inquisition); Kambanda, Bizimungu, Bagosora, and Kagame (Rwanda); Genghis Khan; Pasha, Efendi (Armenia); Jackson (Trail of Tears) .. with good enough choices, can certainly push everyone's buttons equally; the Bible offers limitless options if you wish to tread into radioactive areas(!)....

And, if you manage to offend everybody, it avoids any implication that you may advocate any such despicable policy, as it seems so much overkill.

Even easier? Don't. It's easier to keep a nice friendly game still nice and friendly.

So it's only "grisly" and "inappropriate" if I name them after SS and play a Jewish person? How are the non-WWII ones you mention any more appropriate?

What about naming them after Serbian war criminals and playing a Bosnian Muslim?

I can name one after Stalin, but a Ukranian might take offense. But who cares, Stalin only killed 3-6 million a year in the 1930s.

Cortez is taken (it's a canonical EAS Explorer). Besides, if I play an Indian I might get sued.

Having opened this can of worms, you're right, why not spread the love....

Its very unlikely that an opposing player is even going to get the references. How many people know many war criminals of World War II off the top of their head? Its also doubtful that they would be offended. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the player base of ACtA is a bit more intelligent than that. Provided the simple explanation of 'they ARE Dilgar ships, after all' would be enough to justify the naming convention to most anyone. It is a game, after all. Its not like you are giving them soap before the match.

That said, America's policy of political correctness really pisses me off. If you get all hurt over what someone SAYS (provided it isn't something like FIRE! in a theater), I think you need to seriously evaluate your priorities. Its not like we are all 5 years old. We are adults (or soon to be). Act mature, last time I checked its only the sticks and stones that hurt.

Sorry CZ but thats just being politicially correct to the point of idiocy, if anyone is sad enough to be offended by somoeone naming Dilgar ships after SS officers then personally I would suggest anyone that sensitive not play a hobby where we are, when you get right down to it, making a game out of war and killing.

And for goodness sake its Dilgar we're talking about, anyone who gets offended at you naming a race of genocidal nazi space cats after historical nazis is just being sad.

Sorry if this sounds a bit like I'm having a crack at you but I am just heartily sick and tired of the 'everything has to be politically correct' bollocks that permeates modern society, if you find something someone does offensive fine thats your lookout but the way everyone assumes that you cant say this/that/the other because someone under a certain specific set of circumstances might get offended....

Personally, I wouldnt name my ships after war criminals anyway, but if I was going to I dont see how its any less offensive to name them after others than nazis, in fact personally I would consider naming ships after more recent characters events is far more offensive than Nazi warcriminals from over 60 years ago, nearly (or in fact all) of whom I'm fairly sure are dead by now. I'm not trying to compare or imply one is worse than the other and Im certainly not trying to say that ANY of them are anything other than the subhuman scum they were but I'm just saying that naming ships after nazis is hardly being antisemitic and trying to claim it is just annoys me. It's Dilgar for crying out loud, they ARE basically Nazis, hell they heven wear jackboots and have stormtroopers.

Anyway this thread has been diverted enough so folks can we please just leave the PC bull alone and stop trying to be so friggin serious about what we name our toy spaceships full of talking cat people... ;)
