MY Runequest game

Mage

Mongoose
Well I ran a campaign a while bak and am rnning a new one too. Ill post bits and pieces of how things went.

The party started off with:
Krazek, a goblin theif
Thorne Bloodhoof, a centaur soldier
Shang, a duck mercenary
Alexio, an ogre spellcaster of some sort with a fire rune
Thudde, a great troll soldier
Skutz, a netwlig riding a raptor.

So Mike who played Skutz only appeared to one game, and disappeared afterward, never to return to the group. Additional players jioined ver the coming weeks:

Aldain, a human alchemist
Shaka, a minotaur spellcaster
Grunt, a troll soldier
Graham's character , a troll shaman
Alan's Elf character (I cannot remember his characters name).

Only interesting things to note that Thudde had rolled for maximum strength in character creation, while the elf character had such a low siz stat he was believed to be a halfling, and indeed, started believing it himeself. Out of all these characters, Thudde is the only one who is dead.

We started playing with the Rune of Chaos suppliment, and I will go into that later. Suffice to say the only reasons why the party were not run out of the village for what they did is because they drove off the broo.

Colourful is one word for it. Some of them are getting well into their characters, the others plan on killing other players and taking loot and runes for themselves. A lot of them are new to rpgs but lack sense, while there are a few veteran players in the group.

We started with rune of chaos. Some players found it hard tackling the broo at the start of the scenario. It was my first time running runequest, but I had experience with running cthluhu, playing cthulhu, and a lot of Warhammer Fantasy Role-play. Anyhow. the great troll did most of the work. His player never showed up so we had a one off sub who never came back after the game. Anyhow, the ogre wizard never cast any successful spells despite trying, while one character, who I cannot remember, made only three successful shots at the broo, which were all head shots. Unfortunately because of the 3 points of armour on their head due to horns, he did no damage. Suffice to say after they were dispatched he threw away the bow.

Next, the players followed the scenario and went into Wofe village, into the inn where the tournament entrants introduce themselves.

At this point I would like to note the characters were in the region as hired explorers and adventurers for a wealthy scholar in a nearby city. Basically they have to collect a list of parts and hides from various monsters, and then they get paid a lot of cash, but have a deadline to follow.

A centaur and a minotaur - my sort of party.

You need a block and tackle to help the centaur go up and down walls/caves and some way to stop the minotaur going into battle rage at the drop of a hat, but apart from that they are eminently playable PCs.

Are you using the magical items/spells from Magic of Glorantha? They've got a lot of good stuff for Minotaurs and Centaurs.

My centaur PC somethimes used to let a duck PC ride him into battle, for a laugh. If he got too annoying, I'd pick him up and throw him off.

> Ya the centaur thing will be a problem in the future, I was not too hard on the noobs first campaign about it, but it will be eventually. In my world the minoataurs are a spiritual people and nomadic, proud and respectful, and have no blood frenzy or rage rules.

> I do not have magic of glorantha, but it may be good. Could you elaborate on it.

> We got that with the centuar and goblin with a sort of moving balista mix, with the odd fastball special.

What world ya playing this game in, sounds fun!!!

I GM one game and play a Centaur in the other one. Quallan is a nasty sort when it come to people taking advantage of him, and he feels they do that a lot, even when they don't...

My GM said, it was no good having a centaur in a group, and I have changed his mind. Quallan is NUTS though.. I play him as a manic depressice with ADHD and a little Anxiety dissorder.

Hi,

I used to play a Centaur worshipper of Uleria from Beast Valley, who travelled amongst the Grazers and Beast Folk as a wandering LURVE priestess. She was also a shaman and had a Silver Heart which double her charisma to 36. She wooed Ironhoof and the Feathered Horse Queen on seperate occasions, but was sadly killed by Bigclub the Giant when she assisted a famous Humakti Santedio Steel on his quest to destroy Chaos in Snakepipe Hollow. There were those that suggested that this lord of Death had actually been behind her death, he was the sort of dishonourable scum that gave Humakti a bad name!

> Thanks it is a world of my own creation using elements from: Glorantha, tolkien, elric, and bits from warmachine will be coming into my next campaign. Also some final fantasy influences. The name of the world is Eidolon.

> Our Centaur is anything but noble. He is a rune thirsty hot tempered theif. Screwed the party out of 9000sp and befreinded a vampire in the process...

> Sounds nice! They are power houses thuogh, Thorne has one hell of a damage modifier...

@ Blackyinkin

Sounds like a very deep character and game. Very interesting stuff. BTW I am stealing the name Ironhoof as a centaur clan name now.

Hi,

Ironhoof is the name of the leader of the Beast Folk of Beast Valley, one of the many strange regions that make up Maniria in Genertela, the northern continent of Glorantha. He came to power in the period following the Dragonkill, which wiped out the human inhabitants of the region at the end of the Gloranthan Second Age, directly following the story arc covered in Mongoose RQ Glorantha. He is a hero of legendary proportions, whose story is covered in detailed in King of Sartar. The Feathered Horse Queen is the spiritual leader of the Grazers, a Pure Horse Tribe who live in the valleys to the North-West of Beast Valley. Some claim that some of their number are descended from Centaurs who were dissected into humans and horses by the Trickster. That is only just skimming the surface of this region! If you want depth, Glorantha can always provide it.

There is a lot of info in glorantha, and there are too many suppliments to make it a viable choice for me as a setting. At least with my own setting i have freedom and can take gloranthan elements with other things and make it my own.

Well anyhow, the next part of the tail. I ran rune of chaos, and the party got to the town and entered the inn. The characters played out their scene introducing themselves after the npcs did, and then Victor Malfout (an NPC and bad guy in the scenario) introduced himself as per the scenario, rather rudely and confrontationally (yes I just invented that word). Of course one of the players squared of with him. I'll provide some background info before I describe what happened next.

Krazek had a lot of money when he rolled his character, I think he rolled very near the max for his cultural background, while Thonre took barbarian and was quite poor. Before game it was established these characters knew each other, and that Krazek had leant Thorne some money, which he bought a helmet with. So the helmet has six points of armour.

Anyhow, Thorne started a bit of a brawl with Victor in the bar, the two grappled each other. They rolled strike rank and Thorne won. Since they were grabbing each others arms Thorne (played by 'Gag', a first time rpger) decieded to headbutt him. Since they were so close I figured he just needed to roll about a 30% chance of hitting with no locatoin roll necessary. This reasoning nearly undid the scenario though.

Thorne hit.

I looked at the rules for Broo who had a headbutt Attack. There was a damage value that did not add up with their damage modifier, so I figured that is how much damage a headbutt did. It also had +3 to the roll after this, and I realised how much armour they had in their heads, which is also three, possibly due to horns.

At this point it struck me that Thorne was stilling wearing his helmet with 6 points of armour.

Suffice to say He did a crapload of damage to the scenario bad guy, who is as yet not known to be the bad guy. So he did headbutt +6 damage. At least that is how I ruled it, not sure how the rules cover it. Anyway that was my call.

Victor's nose exploded. He passed his resilience test by the skin of his teeth, and his hitpoints in his head were either 0 or below it. He made a confusing threat and stumbled out of the bar and concussed, wobbled down the main street late at night. There was nobody around, either in bed or at the tavern. He failed another resilience test as the players hung out at the bar. I did not let them see the second roll. Victor failed it, and collapsed in the mud for about 2 hours face down. He was okay after it, I did not want him to die as he was needed to complete the scenario, and I realised a blunt attack would not have been as severe as say a horned helmet, sword or axe.

The night ended, and the players retired to their rooms. The next morning they tucked in to breakfeast, getting up late and eating away in the quiet inn, talking to the bartender, before they took off for the tournament.

You can do what you like with Glorantha. Personally I think calling your centaur character Ironhoof is like calling your D&D mage Gandalf but who cares, some people have fun playing mages called Gandalf. It's your game, you're in charge.

I would have let him die. Many GMs ask on bulletin boards how they can encourage their PCs not to behave like Brits on holiday abroad. I take a leaf out of the Spanish police's handbook and leave them lying bleeding in the street or hold them incommunicado for several days. I believe as a gaming style that it is important that players learn that the world carries on without them.

Victor was an npc and the leader of a Broo clan, he was essential to the scenario. The second campaign will have repurcussions on the players for what they did in the first campaign. A lot of them were rpg noobs, and did not want to be too strict on them first campaign. But it will come back on them.

As for the Iron hoof thing I am going to use it as a clan name. I really do not want to run glorantha, there are too many books, it is too expensive, and although it is cool and I respect it, there are some stuff in it that is just plain weird.
