Music for Traveller

Kinda wondering what accompyments players have for Traveller

Being that I've always run the Free trader stock campaign, I've found blues, guitar rock and other lower key music tends to create a feel of the merchantman...or not putting too fine a point on it, interstellar truck drivers that a lot of groups do to make ends meet while out galaivanting around

the Mass Effect Soundtrack is pretty much perfect for traveller style games imo, its so flavourfull and atmospheric and has that early eighties scfi vibe throughout which just cries out to be used in a scifi game.

The Firefly and Serenity soundtracks are also good, though obviously for a different atmosphere.

In the "blues, guitar rock and low key" category, the other recent and 'quintessentially Traveller' series that can provide good music is the anime Cowboy Bebop.

As I love introducing music (like visuals & sound effects) into my games...there is not one solid piece that makes Traveller music: Traveller.

Electronica like Dune for Starport Bars
Imperial March for Imperial Navy encounter
Reavers suite when I need Pirates
Alien for those tense exploring moments
etc.

For me music about mood and also audio clues for the players to pick upon.

Hi,

I kind of like some of the songs from the Anime show Planetes - but they may be more suited for adventure and exploration type games than a pure merchant type game.

Regards

PF

For dark and griity, nowt beats the nBSG soundtrack. I reckon the Sarah Connor Chronicles OST would be good, too (same composer), if I could bloody find it.

I use the music from EVE online which I played alot last spring.

I agree and I too have looked high and low for this - with no luck.

Here was a tune I tended to have playing int he background for the Merchants. strangely it worked for the 'blue collar' merchants

I always used background music where possible.
I'd avoid easily recognisable stuff from the Star Wars or Star Trek movies.

Recommended soundtracks to hunt down -

Aliens
Running Man
Robocop
Red Planet

Battlestar Galactica - Bear McReary's work is stunning, some of the best composition you're ever likely to hear. Give this a listen:

I usually use a musical introduction into the adventure, a soft background
music for most of the adventure, and some themes as effects for specific
events during the adventure.

For example, this is the theme I sometimes use for the Federation Patrol,
typical old fashioned German science fiction music:

However, I also sometimes work against the genre, and this is the theme
I used when the characters had to deal with an escaped herd of yaks led
by a very grumpy bull:

I spent the last two days putting together some background music for my campaign, kicking off properly tonight......

Now to me Music in games is useful, but because of the limitations of location, i do not have control of the music (at least not enough control that playing the right music for the right section would not disrupt the flow of the game), so i will be setting it on shuffle.

Now i have thrown in some of the slower Cowboy bebop stuff, and also the bluesy bebop stuff. I have chucked in a few other Blues music. I also through in some Johnny Cash.

I have also put in some songs from the BSG Soundtrack and also from t he Hunt for Red October, Dr who and other soundtracks. I also chucked in some Danny Elfman and John Williams

also Apocalyptica and other instrumentals.

I tried to go for mostly instrumentals, as they make good background music.

It is a very nice mix that i will give a try to tonight and see how it goes, it will be on shuffle so i won't know what comes next!

Soundtracks are fantastic and can be mined for great mood music, even if the original film had nothing whatsoever to do with what you are doing.

The most effective "mood music" for me came from the Basic Instinct soundtrack. I used the rather spooky and dramatic music from that whenever my characters were close to running into something controlled by The Virus on board a ship.

It was very effective and any association they might have had with the original film was gone for them after one particularly good session.

Some of the favorites for our group:

Tangerine Dream: Mars Polaris, Stratosfear
Synergy: Semiconductor, Chords, Electronic Realizations for Rock Orchestra, Sequencer
"For All Mankind" soundtrack
Mike Oldfield: Ommadawn, Tubular Bells, well, any album really
Jean Michel Jarre: Oxygene
Isao Tomita: Kosmos, Firebird, The Planets

And one friend insists the game be kicked off with Styx. :)

I like to put all my Ozric Tentacles CDs on shuffle. Great stuff, perfect background music and very atmospheric, incorporating electronica, dub, world music, and just plain shredding every once in a while. Captures the vibe I try for in my games very well.
