Banded Mongoose
Which have you found to be the most disappointing Mongoose Traveller product and why?

The Vehicles supplements, I intended to use them to design
vehicles for my water world setting, and for this purpose they
turned out to be worse than useless.

I chose 760 Patrons, 1st Edition because it has a much better second edition. I would have put Robot, but I have learned how to use it and find it useful. I was originally not enamored with the Vehicle books, but after actually learning to use them, I like them both.

I voted for CSC as a "best" product.

My overall satisfaction with MGT has been extremely high (which is why I own the entire line). Yes, some books have a lower percentage of great/good content than others, but I like and get something out of all of them!

This is an incredibly flawed set of polls. You need to have all MgT products listed in each category. Otherwise you are just weighting things for or against your own personal favorites/dislikes.

Firstly you can only do a poll with ten items maximum. So I picked the items I believe are the ones that are the least popular or are possibly considered some of the best. I obviously don't know which are going to be picked for certain - that's the point of the poll.

Secondly there is 'another' choice for each poll if you want to choose something else so I am not forcing you to pick from the list in any way, so the polls are not 'biased' in any way.

And thirdly its just a poll for interest sake - lighten up!

Out of what I have, I would say it's a toss between "Mercenary" and "Merchant Prince." Though both have useful bits.

However, I have not voted, primarily because I don't have a number of the books listed.

I agree, I'm one of the rarities that wanted to vote for the vehicle guides as the best (yes I know it had errors, like most of those in the polls, I still had great fun with it) and it isn't even available in that poll, just the worst poll.

Hoping you missed the 'Another not mentioned (please specify)' option on both polls given you 'know' your choice is a 'rarity'*.

* with the company deciding to redo the products, suspect you're safe on that call, but, hey, you are free to make a poll and find out - just make sure to somehow list every single book as a separate option or you will be biased and your poll will be the worst ever! :P

I like them all, but of them, I would have to agree that the vehicles book was disappointing in that the build system is so, confusing. Which didn't really bother me, because I have been doing my own "building" since Classic, so know how to do what I want pretty much off the top of my head. Still, I am looking forward to the new book with the new system. It will be nice to be able to do "official" builds rather than my personal ones.

You are mixing together two peoples' responses here. I'll take credit for the error of not noticing the Other category, I'm not the one who said it was a biased poll or "the worst ever" (I don't think anyone did), just agreeing in general since I skimmed (my fault) and didn't find my choice without seeing Other.

Wasn't 'mixing' anything. It was already explicitly mixed by your 'agreed' to quote and worst ever is just an exaggeration of your 'the worst', meant to reinforce the quip at the end as a razz, not an insult. Smilies only go so far, but it matched the intent.

It is easy to miss poll options and post intents. My apologies if I offended. I did assume the actual nature of your criticism was just a simple misread.

My biggest disappointments have been with the adventures Beltstrike and Prison Planet. They aren't set up very well to accommodate players/GMs who are new to Traveller. I'd love to see some good intro level adventures done that can be used to bring in new players.

I've been rattling on about that for ages - I would like to see some of the classic Traveller adventures redone, some of the double ones were great but they all had generalities and a lack of character/immersion straight from the book without a great deal of referee work. And some even had massive plot holes. I will never forget the one Across the Bright Face where the creator obviously didn't expect the characters to just follow or walk along the monorail track to the next city - which was situated in perfectly flat terrain and would prevent the characters getting lost or encountering any variety of terrain at all - a very dull adventure. I changed much of the terrain around the monorail to mountainous and swamp myself to make a reason for the characters to venture elsewhere and start getting lost, and put the monorail on stilts so they couldn't easily walk along it!

It's the thing Mongoose need to do most is some decent small starter adventures like those classic ones. They are getting bogged down with producing all these flaming rule books etc and there just aren't any nice short adventures.

You could take a look at the "Living Traveller" adventures, in my view
they make good small starter adventures, and they are free.

Where do you get these from? Cant see any on the Living Traveller forum. I didn't even know what Living Traveller was until today actually, I've never taken much interest in it not going to any conventions, but I see you can play it at home as well so they say.

Unfortunately I have no idea where they moved the download
links to. However, if you send me a PM with your e-mail ad-
dress, I can send you the four I have downloaded. You would
only need a little patience, we are currently preparing to mo-
ve, and I am therefore less often at the PC than usual.

Well, I've run both books with players who not only are new to Traveller but to RPGs in general. It worked out OK.

PS: I was new to Traveller to some degree as well - GMing and playing.

Hmm ... so Mercenary was the most disappointing product ever and yet there are no plans to release an amended version, unlike the rest of them. I would love to see a new version concentrating on merc equipment and massed /small unit advanced warfare.

I had to go with the "Other not mentioned" becuase basically all of the products you mentioned were disapointing, and I couldn't pick just one of them.

Best regards,

Ewan
