Mongoose Hall 08 Tournament - Deep Space

Hi guys,

Next week we will be posting the tournament pack for Deep Space, the Call to Arms tournament we are running at Mongoose Hall on May 11th. However, I wanted to give you a quick heads up.

Your squadron will be heading into an uncharted system near the Rim, following rumours of high technology, lost civilisations, and the news that other governments have shown a great interest in the area. The top brass at high command are unwilling to commit huge resources to such scant information, and so your resources are limited!

Your fleet will comprise one Skirmish level ship, and one Battle level ship, with which you must complete specific missions throughout the day. Scenarios are 'blind', and you will only be given them just before you start play.

We will be posting the full tournament pack next week, as I say, but you are welcome to submit entries now, if you fancy being an early bird.

Entry is the usual £5, and will get you free entry into the show (we will also make sure you have enough time between battles to enjoy the rest of the convention!). You can book your place either by PayPal (paypal@mongoosepublishing.com, credit card (01793 434488), or by cheque (Mongoose Publishing, 52-54 Cricklade Road, Swindon, Wilts, SN2 8AF).

Please remember to let us know not only your name, but what fleet you intend to use!

I could use Dilgar (Tikrit and Ochlavita) or EA (Omega and Assault Hyperion)

I think Drazi would be a VERY bad idea.

How about Shadows? They don't have a Skirmish choice. Also, how would ISA/Psi Corps work with their allies?

Shadows and Draz\i are boned, yeah. But sounds interesting - does a Drakh Ma'Cu count as one Battle level ship, even though it comes with its own mini-swarm? If so then it would seem they have a massive advntage!

It doesn't get them for free. . .

The Drazi might do very well - remember, you will be playing scenarios with specific objectives.

The Shadows won't be able to compete, no (just leaves 12 other fleets to choose from. . .).

There won't be any allies permitted. Pure fleets only!

Shadows not being involved sort of makes sense; they already know what's there (indeed they might have put it there!) - granted the Vorlons are probably equally aware but they would tag along to stop people turning over damp rocks and poking things that they aren't ready to know about.

The Shadows on the other hand would regard poking things found under damp rocks as a learning experience (admittedly, normally learning why not to poke things found under damp rocks, but a learning experience nonetheless)

Also, how would ISA/Psi Corps work with their allies?
One hunter and a fighter carrier, I guess.

Not an ideal fleet for an open battle, but a hunter's not bad at one-on-one duels (which this basically would be) and stealth is nice if there's a softly, softly mission.

Given the setting, slightly annoyed that it's not possible to field an Explorer-class! Oh, well.

Hmmm.....might try Vree, actually. A Command Saucer with a Scout. Fairly fast if forced to run away from things, can turn on a dime if doding stuff.....and can pelt something with torpedos without having to go too close....

An escort scout would work too, but I have suspicions of not being able to field the battle-level ship in some of the scenarios and an escort scout on its own possesses slightly less firepower than the Wandsworth Army Cadets and has a handy resemblance to a clay pigeon to boot.

Question: will everyone be doing the same mystery scenarios? Or draw them out of a hat? Or will there be some degree of assigning missions to fleets able to do them? (since most fleets don't have a lot of choice in composition)

You won't know what you are doing until about five minutes before you are due to start fighting :)

Will you allow homemade counters? For example, I've made up some Drazi counters, so I'd probably go for a Stormfalcon and a Darkhawk.

OK, assuming there's the traditional party from Greg's Crew on the way, how would we go about actually paying?

I would assume that if we put a note on a Paypal payment saying what it was for, that this would be acceptable?

Hi guys,

The official announcement for this tournament will go up in a couple of days, but for you early birds, the tournament pack is now up;
