modern - well 80's..

Thanks for the GG link DM, now i'm having trouble deciding on what supplier to use for ships
Navwar or hallmark.. hmmmm

I'm guessing I spend a proportion of my time on those - but I'm fleetwide on both new and in-service ships (and occasionally on those of other nations as well) Probably one of the few forum posters who has seen the effects of naval weapons up close and personal :D

Love to see a modern verison, sub hunting etc, i have been reading end war book, and fancy some sub combat....

At our local gaming club last year we had a bit of a crack at Harpoon - did a russian sub hunt for a t-boat which involved lots of map movement. It's tough to do with a fine ground scale and a large table - we had helicopters dropping sonobuoys all over the damn place and following my limited understanding of fleet doctrine for these sorts of things had towed arrays out doing sprint/turn to try and triangulate where the sub was.

About all we managed to do by the end of the game was torpedo an unsuspecting whale and shoot down a few sub-launched harpoons.

Great game for planning and playing - not a duke it out gunfight game a la WW2.

It was a very enjoyable game, all round - the submarine did manage to run the blockade, but we had something like a 6 foot long string of sonobuouys across the width of the table, a frigate with a big hole in the side limping along, missiles intercepting missiles, and the exploding whale.

It took 2 three hour sessions to play, and it's a very complicated rules-set (for example you need to drop sonar at different depths above/below the thermocline, obey such rules as windage for takeoff/landing, worry about fuel in your choppers etc.) but sometimes that's not a bad thing.

Ah yes, Harpoon. Still got the rules and the "Battles of the Third World War" book around somewhere. Tried doing a game once and had to abandon half way; just far too complicated. I rather liked the Skytrex Modern Naval rules myself - just the right mix of playability and 'realism' to get a good game. I don'y have VAS yet, but if you do a set of moderns, sign me up for a set. I still have a load of Soviet and American ships I can dust off, including a Kirov! I always favoured the Pacific Fleet for some reason.

Interestingly enough, I heard that the Russians are looking to restart Arctic patrols - while it's nice to think (from a wargames perspective) of the fleet coming out of mothballs, I think back to some of the near misses and collisions of the cold war american and soviet ships and shudder. Theres a lot less room to manouevre at sea than people realise........

Indeed, a very good set of rules. These (plus the Navwar edition that ame out a few years later) were the rules that got me started in modern naval wargaming.

I heard that the Russians are looking to restart Arctic patrols

Janes reported Udaloy DDGs and a Slava CG deploying to the Arctic just now, squaring up against the Norwegians in a territorial dispute thats making itself known at the moment. What wth the retreat of the ice caps, the opening of the NorthWest Passage, US / Canadian tensions over borders, Danish and Norwegian claims, potentially massive oil reserves and the Russians it looks like the Arctic is going to be a VERY interesting place over the next few decades!!

Ah, yes. A hot zone in the making by the sounds of it. I was also looking out my set of the Naval Campaign rules for the Skytrex rules. They are a bit complicated in places and could do with an update, but definately well worth looking for if you can find them.

I liked the "country design" aspect of those campaign rules, even down to the size of the national airline :)

Bit of a thread necro - but looks like we're having another crack at Harpoon next week.

As an aside, does anyone know if the USSR ha(ve/d) any analogues for ASROC?

SS-N-15 and -16 seem to be the only ones which bear any resemblance - although the former is actually a SUBROC analog?

The SS-N-14 "Silex" missile carried by the Udaly, Kresta II and Krivak classes is an ASW weapon (Russian designation RPK-3 or RPK-4, depending on the particular missile)

Hey DM, you still got those experimental modern rules for VaS? I PMd you to get a read through copy but haven't heard from you :)

Haven't had a chance to do anything with them I'm afraid :( Too much "real life" getting in the way of gaming.

That was all good fun - yours truly landed on the Russian side, commanding a surface attack fleet (Kara, Krivak, Sovremny, Kynda) against a British ASW fleet (two 42s, Leander, 22, Invincible).

After fending off a hasty attack by 4 Harriers (yes, I managed to shoot down a whopping 8 Sea eagles before they came close!), I turned towards and threw a salvo of ancient Shaddocks (shot down by the CAP and some well placed Sea Darts) before coming in a bit closer and overwhelming the poor HMS Sheffield with a massive salvo of Moskits (4 out of 8 struck home).
Then Penelope took a hit from a second salvo of Shaddocks (1 of 4 made it - bloody sea cat and harriers this time).

Leaving the Russians in a rather precarious position with their best missiles spent, and a carrier reloading for another air strike...

Guess the missile pickets did their job!
