Mistakes on the Ship Builder's Manuel

The prices for the Atmospheric and Afterburner options are not in the Shipbuilder's manuel. The cost of both "varies". Every other item that has costs which vary has tables where you can look up those costs. One thing I hate about ships in the B5 RPG is that you don't have the costs for them. Well at least with the Shipbuilder's Manuel you could figure it out.

Mongoose needs to tighten up it's quality control.

...Actually, you can't really use the SBM to figure out costs. For one thing a LOT of ships have chatacteristics that can not be generated within the SBM rules (for instance WAY too many "spaces", Handling scores that just aren't possible, no limitations of using sensors based on crew skills, etc). For another, the "official" word is that "government built/mass produced" vessels get all sorts of breaks just because they were constructed by a collection of low bidders.

Certainly the SBM is a step in the right direction, I'm just of the opinion it needs a fair amount of added house rules to make it consistant with the rest of the system.

Mass production should be enough to get a good break by itself without worrying about the tiny amount you can save by being constructed on the cheap :)

Tooling up to produce a certain part, much like producing plastics for miniatures, would be one of the biggest costs - alongside paying people to design the thing, build a prototype, test it, fix the problems, rinse, and repeat, until you get it right.

So yeah, a standard design should be *way* cheaper than a one-off, and using the SBM to get costs for standard vessels will give you a cost far above what it would be to buy one. If you wanted to build a duplicate of a standard ship yourself from scratch, however, it would be fairly accurate :)

So basically what you're saying is there's a hispanic guy working on the project, and for some reason all the mistakes are his fault? Racist pig! 8)
